While working in electronics sales I learned Sony and Panasonic actually want their products to stop working after a couple of years, that way you'll shell out more for the bigger better version. And don't be fooled into thinking you're buying a different brand just because the name is different: Just like Pepsi owns Doritos and Disney owns the NRA, Sony owns a lot of more "economical" name brands too.
