Roger Ebert said:

Keaton is famous for a shot in "Steamboat Bill, Jr.," where he stands in front of a house during a cyclone, and a wall falls on top of him; he is saved because he happens to be exactly where the window is. There was scant clearance on either side, and you can see his shoulders tighten a little just as the wall lands. He refused to rehearse the stunt because, he explained, he trusted his set-up, so why waste a wall?

Let's take a random moment to recognize the genius of Joseph Frances Keaton Jr.

Seen most of his films. Truely a lost art and Genre. Jackie Chan did an homage to this sequence in one of his Chinese Language films.

I'm taking a "History of Film" class because it satisfies a transfer requirement, and we've gone over Keaton extensively. He really was one of the forefathers of slapstick comedy, and the stunts he does in his movies are pretty incredible at times.

If comedy were weapons, Buster Keaton would be an invisible laser that shot the soul straight out of your body while Harold Lloyd would be a semi-automatic idiot launcher.

I heard there was a population dip when he was popular as his comedy made men laugh the sperm out of their nuts.

Hence the term...

Bust a nut.

The General is my favorite of his films.

The scene where he walks on a moving train just can't be done anymore...

The first short I saw of his was Sherlock Jr. and I laughed so hard I literally had to stop it to catch my breath. I've been a huge fan ever since.

Great thread!

I've probably laughed more at the few Buster Keaton flicks I've seen than all the modern "comedies" combined.

I never particularly got into Buster Keaton's films. However, I do recognize his talent and the influence he had.

And that isn't to say I never laughed at his movies, I just prefer mine with dialogue. Physical comedy has never been my favorite.

Hits stunts are all amazing, and he probably made a lot of people realize how funny it is to watch someone run from the cops.

He totally could've kicked Chaplin's ass.

Mostly so I could say.. "My Dad's the raddest man on Earth. He makes Charlie Chaplin look like Pauly Shore."

I saw The General with a live band (The Guy Forsyth Band, out of Austin, TX) performing music and sound effects....

truly incredible.

Later on in that wonderful film festival, Mel Gibson said I look like Buster Keaton. I dont know if he was just saying that out of eerie coincidence, or if he knew that we'd watched it earlier.....

$5 at WalMart, get a Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin 2 pack. 2 movies from each.
