The Library of Alexandria, long considered one of the largest respositories of human knowledge in the world, has been discovered by a Polish-Egyptian excavating team.

Professor Wileke Wendrich, of the University of California, told BBC News Online that the discovery was incredibly impressive.

Alexandria was a major seat of learning in ancient times and regarded by some as the birthplace of western science.
The library was later destroyed, possibly by Julius Caesar who had it burned as part of his campaign to conquer the city.

That's so nifty. Too bad whoever the fuck it was burned it. At least it was made of stone so the structure survived... sorta.

That's amazing. Egypt recently opened a new national library in Alexandria. It's a very modern, impressive building.

The title is a little misleading. They discovered the SITE of the Library of Alexandria. The library as well as all the contents were distroyed in a fire sometime in 47 BC.

Yeah, which is why you read the article, the portion of which stating that the library was destroyed has been reproduced in the first post of this thread.

Misleading or not, it's still a major find. I personally can't understand why this isn't al over the news. The only thing I can find on the net is the BBC article citeds above.

I woefully regret all contents being destroyed. Not only is it a severe tragedy that untold amounts of ancient works were lost to the ages, but, also, I need a job.

I read Memoirs of Cleopatra which went on about how Julius Ceaser destroyed the library accidentaly in a battle.

Of course it is historical fiction, who knows....but I found it interesting.
