If you are a manager or a boss at a powerful corporation then it pays to treat your employees with respect. Number one they might come in with AK-47 and spray the office with bullets or they may realize that the pen is mightier than the sword and write a scathing satirical novel that rips apart all the ideals that corporations really follow. That’s what former Hewlett-Packard employee Max Barry did. While he was pretending to be a good worker bee he wrote his first novel, Syrup, which lampooned corporate...

i was told about this book a few months ago by my stepfather, who runs a bookstore. the idea sounded a lot like "snow crash," with the burbclaves and people identifying themselves by clans owned by corporations. but wow, he's obviously gone a long way with this, what with the movie and all.

I was a member of his nationstates game for a while. That was kind of cool particularly for a net freebie. I will have to track me down a copy of the book.

i can't beleive i never even noticed this interview till now...

i though jennifer government was brilliant, like trillian i just couldn't put it down. his website's really good too, and has some wicked links. i'm also loving the fact that people want to teach this at school - "now, Jonny, what have we learnt today?" "nike is evil and must be destroyed miss" "well done, jonny, have a sweet" - i reckon the movie could be the new fight club, that's if it ever gets released. i say sarah polley for jennifer.

I really liked the book, and the nationstates site was pretty fun; I wasted a good amount of time back in the day

Great interview, Max Barry is all kinds of awesome. Especially in Jennifer Government and Syrup, he's one of the few people that can really send up marketing and big business and still be genuinely funny and entertaining while doing it.
Company was good, but I can't wait for his next book to come out. Can we have another SG interview when it does? Please? love
