what's wrong with wanting people to learn how to spell? is it really too much to ask that others learn how to spell the words in the language that they are trying to speak in? fucker?

There's nothing wrong with wanting people to learn how to spell correctly, but when people start using spelling as the end all be all of any sort of discussion, or to point out the legitimacy of one's intelligence based on simple spelling errors I think is wrong. If someone were to point out and mock my spelling errors, I could just as easily and justifiably point out their capitalization errors. wink

...or my own grammer mistakes. shocked

ok. that's cool.

by the way, i choose not to use capital letters because of my own personal preference. my grammar is probably atrocious [possibly sic] as well, but i write conversationally. i respect what you're saying, though.

but i can also understand what the other side is up to, especially if it could become applicable to the topic of the discussion that led into the grammar-nazi-ism.

[i feel that my semi-drunken state should excuse me from be intelligent from this point on]

And yet it's ok to end a sentence with a preposition? wink

My name's crispy and I am a recovering spelling/grammar Nazi.
It just bothers me.

I've gotten better about it, but the people that don't even try ... and those who make a point of using 'unique language' annoy me to no end.

Oh ... and get the fuck off my lawn.

Everyone needs to just shut up and get a damn Macintosh... with global spell check. Why, what I'm typing right now is being checked, and any misspelled words get a nice little red underline.

There's no way around it, though. Basic spelling and grammar errors, unless nit-picky debates over obscure multiple spellings and archaic grammar, do reflect a lack of care on your part to make your argument as clear and reasoned as possible.

Going out on a limb here, but in my experience, the spelling and grammar nazis only come out when there's something in your argument (other than technical issues) that they take issue with, and immediately attacking your writing proficiency gives them an upper hand. I know, I'm guilty of it.

Long story short, if you're making a difficult-to-defend point, or trying to spark debate over a touchy issue, at least take the time to proofread your post. That way, you won't have to deal with people pointing out technical issues, and get get right to the argument you had hoped for in the first place.

Yeah, we can be assholes at times, but the literary gestapo would rather talk then have to deal with annoying spelling issues. Especially ones that clearly indicate laziness (teh=the, etc...)

Actually, ending a sentence with a preposition is not grammatically incorrect and never was; it used to be considered bad form, and an unsophisticated use of the language, but that particular rule has been phased out of modern English. As far as i know, it is no longer taught in schools; I for one never was never taught that rule.

No apostrophe was necessary in the above statement. Though it is possible that in my mentally exhausted final exam state I missed the point of that remark, I suppose. If so, enlighten me.

"... is it really too much to ask that others learn how to spell the words in the language that they are trying to speak in?"

That may be true, but that is one ugly ass sentence.

I was being facetious about the preposition thing ... hence the smilie.
I don't know all of the grammar rules by the book, but I know what reads well.

I sleep now.

I just bring that up as often as possible because that stupid, outdated rule annoys me. That and I'm preparing for a few timed essays tomorrow, so I'm in informative mode. It wasn't meant as any sort of comment on you; I caught the emoticon.
