As much as I hate agreeing with Stocky on anything, I'm still trying to figure out what language Mason & Dixon was written in.

Vonnegut's still alive, I'll say him. I'm not really into literary fiction. My favorite author today is James Ellroy. He's not exactly a great artist, he's just a really good storyteller.

I was just gonna post, "Is Vonnegut still alive?"

i love this woman. Blonde, must read. also, black water; her short stories.... night side. i love her to no end
also, and of course
Italo Calvino,
i love invisible cities and i've read many of his books in the native language of italian... Marcovaldo was also pretty entertaining. i love his simple style.
(not american born, sorry. but totally worth the exception)
Edwidge Danticat
Krik?Krak!... is awesome
and also, Breathe Eyes Memory is A MUST READ.
(also, hatiian born, but educated at Barnard and Brown)
there's also something about Joan Didion. maybe its having to do with my love for norcal. who knows.

I read Bellefluer a few years back. It was pretty damn good, although incredibly bizarre. I thought the ending was a bit weak though.

[grits teeth and stares death in the eyes...]

ok - one last try at hijacking this thread back:

has anyone read any Richard Powers?
particularly "The Time of Our Singing"?
