I'm lost
March 2004

MAY 03, 2004 03:24 PM

I've seen numerous comments throughout threads. As I see it most of you are too young to understand the peace movement in the first place. Also they are people of love and peace.Something that is needed a little more on here anyhow. So much aggression on here and for what? I mean as far as attitude. My mom was a hippy and my pops was a biker. Two totally different lifestyles but one common ideal(love). For some reason many peeps have lost site of that and it is a good representation of so much anger and problems with todays society.Since when did it become such a bad idea to want to embrace one another and take care of mother earth and environmental, social, ecological issues.Actually most hippies aren't smelly dirty people. It's a misrepresentation by people too young to have grown up in the era.I would like the haters to tell me why it's so bad to be a hippy or a hippy at heart?

its not bad, just fun. My mom was a hippy and my dad a biker as well(thats kind of weird now that I think about it) I have absolutely no real beef with hippies. I admire the ideals.

Wait, I thought the common ideal of bikers was crystal meth? tongue

Seriously though, the vast majority of the "dirty smelly hippy" posts around here are made in jest, and when they're not it's usually a more of a case of a conservative member taking shots at a more liberal member's beliefs, not so much targeted at hippies themselves.

People who do not bathe, and instead douse themselves in patchouli and then ride around on public transit irk me. People who assume that I eat meat/dislike Phish/shave my legs only because nobody has taken the time to educate me about veganism/attending Phish concerts/having furry limbs, and then take it upon themselves to "enlighten" me on the subject irk me even more. mad

However, if you do not do any of those things, then we got no problem, regardless of how long your dreadlocks may be or how many pairs of Birkenstocks you may own. kiss

They were naive and idealistic, but that said, I got no particular problem with them.

Hunter S. Thompson said it best:

Raoul Duke: We are all wired into a survival trip now. No more of the speed that fueled that 60's. That was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling "consciousness expansion" without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously... All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create... a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody... or at least some force --is tending the light at the end of the tunnel.

the problem with the drug culture is that not everyone is right for drugs, and when it became an almost accepted part of the "counter mainstream" there were a lot of people who took these drugs that weren't right for them.

The people we're referring to aren't from that time either. The hippies of our generation are also too young to be a part of the love movement you speak of, so they generally fuck it up. Most of the time in annoying, smelly ways. If you choose not to wash your ass as an expression of personal freedom, then I choose not to respect or like you out of the same personal freedom. If a hippy is going to cloud up my nose with rank BO, then I see no difference in clouding up their face with my cutting opinions.
