The new addition to our family, Callidia Daniels:

Callidia, from the latin "callidus" for "clever, dextrous, experienced, skilful/cunning".

I have wanted a ferret for a while now. Your new addition to the family kind of reminds me of a baby polar bear.

I really didn't want to have to go on pooper-scooper duty all of the time, though. Can they be litter trained like cats?

Thanks for posting the new topic in our group. I already replied.

BTW, these pics load really slowly on dial-up connections. You might want to post lower-res pics in the future.

Funny, my mother actually has a degree in Latin. She just got a Latin tutoring gig.

P.S. Yes, I know dial-up sucks. . .I don't have much choice in the matter right now. frown

They're like cats in that they don't poop where they sleep, they can be easily trained to use a litter box, because they'll go to the same corner(s) to poopy. They don't just drop it wherever they are like a puppy.

So, in short, yes.

Ferrets make nice pets - for people who know how to take care of them!

Last year someone dropped off their ferret at our shelter who was old and lazy and losing all of his hair... well after taking him to a vet we found out that he was almost a baby (very young), and him being lazy and losing hair was due to being malnurished and not being old at all.

People who get animals and don't read up on how to take care of them suck!

By the way, your ferret photos are cute! Thanks for sharing. Sorry about the rant.

what about that ferret smell ya know? i've always wanted one, but i'm afraid of the smell, i know you can get thier scent glands removed but that strikes me as a bit cruel, just so i can't smell that ferrety smell.
which i don't mind personally, but others might?

any advice.

Well, she has a distinct odor, but if you get them from the pet store they'll have already been descented and spayed/neutered. We tried to find one outside of a Pet Store setting, with no luck, but we probably would have had one descented anyway. No matter what, they're going to have a *little bit* of a ferrety musky smell, though. I personally don't feel descenting them is any more cruel than spaying/neutering.

thanks man.

no, i didn't mean it was anymore or less cruel, than anything else most pets go through, i just feel all funny about it. like i'm doing it for me, to stop the smell.

but hey, it is good news.

and i mean no intentional insult to anyone with my words.

damn i'm gonna have to buy me one now, me and the lady have been talking about it for ages.
thanks keith.

Aww, come on you guys!

Support the animal rescues and animal shelters before you support pet stores.

Please!?

If you bathe the ferret every now and then, it helps with the smell.
There are special shampoos for ferrets too.

But Keith is right, there will always be a lingering ferret-y smell.

Like I said, we tried. There is no ferret rescue in Oklahoma, and the city shelters don't recieve many ferrets, and don't keep the ones they do, and we scanned the paper for people selling their ferrets for two months with no luck.

Ha, I didn't mean just you.
I am glad that you went out of your way to try and support the rescues and shelters, though.

That makes me smile!

((none of this is was meant to be offensive towards Kestrel or other petshop workers - even though she explained that the cats/dogs being sold at her petshop are actually from shelters and that she wouldn't work there if they weren't!))

Keith, how much care do Ferrets need? I've wanted a ferret too for a long time, and I'd prolly get one when we renegotiate our lease in july (if they let us have a pet).
I'd be afraid of the little fella running off. I had terrible times as a child with hamsters, they'd always run off and drown in the water heater. frown

don't they get into all sorts of trouble?

They're very mischievous and clever. They can get into almost any hole, they love to get into tight spaces, and they can open your kitchen cabinet doors. They also love to get up into the box springs of your mattress, sofa, or recliner, and many ferrets meet their untimely demise that way. frown Ours stays in her big cage the majority of the time, and we just let her out two or three times a day to play. When she gets litter trained a little better, we may "ferretproof" our house and let her roam a little more.

awwwwwwwwwwww.
i used to have a ferret, but i had to give him away when i went to college. i gave him to someone that already had 2 and just let them rule the house, so thats good.

here is my mascis (my ferret's name) story:

had a party. after the party, mascis got out of his cage (he knew how to get out of it), and was running around. im lying on the couch and i hear him behind it banging around. finally he comes out from under the couch dragging a FULL, unopened bud light longneck bottle. i watched him drag it almost all the way across the room before i finally took it from him. he gave me the most evil look. he was actually pissed off. i swear if i hadn't taken it from him, he woulda kept it in his cage and figured out how to open it.

awwww i want an albino or a cinnamon one again !!!

i had 8 ferrets last year, I take in/adopt all the sickly ones from a couple different shelters in the area and one from NJ, all but two of my furslinkies were from shelters ^_^

but frown with taking in the sick babies they always end up dieing sooner. but i had the last 8 for 3 years of which 4 of the 8 where older than 7 ^____^

anywho I have three right now ^_^ and i LOVE the smell of ferrets!!!! eeee they smell so musky good smile

i had two with adreanal disease that got much better and died of relatively old age. but the newly manifactured duck soup was and is GREAT , if you don't already use it i highly reccomend it, just for supplements and whatnot ^_~ it is so much easier to buy it than it was to make it.

but YAY for new ferrets wink and those are cute pics, haha it is so hard to get good pictures of ferrets, they move so fast biggrin
