Leading miserabilist and former Smiths front-man Morrissey has fallen foul of the Homeland Security dragnet, according to BBC radio reports. It is not yet clear whether or the US officials involved had listened to Meat is Murder, or whether they thought they had a match on notorious Manchester terror mastermind Anwar al-Morrissey.

Morrissey is now a resident of Los Angeles, and was reportedly detained for some time at LAX airport. The BBC quotes him as saying that there was some problem with his passport, and that he was briefly suspected of being a terrorist. But he'll have been used to that in his musical career. And now he'll have one of those letters from the Department of Homeland Security saying he's not - but we doubt that'lll cheer him up much.

Blogging.la reports on this story via The Register. I can't really say I'm surprised that a mix up like this happened, and if anything it's a great example at the efforts are being spent on usless measures. Do you feel safer?

it's more social commentary on homeland security and all that, the fact that this guy is the target isn't that important

sorry i wasn't directing that at you, i'm just frustrated with the fact that most times i log into the admin section of the music blog, there is yet another morrissey, cure, or pixies post, and most of the time they completely lack any foundation other than misguided praise

This does not make me feel safer. Maybe that isn't saying too much, because I didn't feel compelled to "buy me a rifle and head for the hills" like all the other "patriots". Instead I just shrugged and WENT ON WITH MY FUCKING LIFE. Some people don't to do that.

Homeland security pisses me off. Not only does it make me uncomfortable that my rights can be potentially violated for practically no reason, but also because they've tarnished the once moderate efficiency of the Airport system.

Used to be things ran relatively smoothly, now it takes FUCKING FOREVER to do anything at the goddamn airport. Add to that the security people have been overcome by a bout of fucking PARANOIA. They don't allow nail clippers on an airplane, I was told recently. I'm sorry, but if you let someone take you and 100 other people hostage with a pair of goddamn nail clippers, you fucking DESERVE TO DIE.

I mourn not for Morrissey's inconvenience, however.

At least he wasn't trying to carry a loaded firearm and "forgot" about it in his baggage. They would have crucified him then.

The ban on nail clippers was during the first month or so. That's been lifted for at least a year now. Get a grip.
