I was browsing past Carly's Pornblography today when I was alerted to this.

It seems performer Darren James tested positive for HIV, and the industry is compiling lists of second and third generation contacts that are growing so quickly that AVN is suggesting stopping production until at least June 8th.

This must be a scary time for anyone in the industry.

I like porn just as much as anyone but I think the "performers" or "actors" should get tested every 6 months or maybe before they do a movie.

How often is testing? Is it voluntary?

They do. They have to show proof also.

Would anyone even know if they stopped production for like a year? There's something like 200 porn movies produced a week. Even the most avid porn fan would be hard pressed to view that much.

That's real scary though. I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner on this level.

Wow, scary. I have considered HIV and the adult film industry before, but I've never actually seen what happens when someone tests positive. While it's not "neat" that someone (probably multiple someones) is infected, it's interesting to look at the procedures going down, and how they have all the generations, and projected dates for testing, etc.

imagine if that guy sleeps with a couple of girls a week for his work, and they sleep with a couple of people and they sleep with a couple of people etc.
he could be single handedly responsible for wiping out a generation of pornstars eeek

reading about this is very tragic, but at the same time, it will be, for lack of a better term, interesting to see how everyone responds to this matter. can you imagine an industry as large as adult entertainment grinding to a complete work stoppage? wow.

also, i have a question after looking at all of this quarantine information. why are the dates so close together? from my understanding of the testing procedures for HIV, doesn't it take a solid 3-4 months for a reliable test to be made for virus anti-bodies? the quarantine for retesting is only a month or so from the date of potential infection for the 1st generation. have methods of testing advanced that far as to allow for a testing for anti-bodies after only one month? and why start the quarantine with people who worked with mr. james within the month of his infection? it would be good if perhaps they extended the quarantine to people who worked with him in the month before he came back positive as well.

at any rate, i sincerely hope for the best for all the talent involved. this is very sad.

yeah i agree 100%, but one of the fastest ways to get HIV is to have someone cum in your eye...an action that seems to be popular in porn for some odd reason. your eye requires so much blood to function, it is like a direct line into your blood stream.

even if people got tested every week, that would not be enough. sometimes it can take up to a year for the antibody to be found using conventional testing. in most people it takes 3-6 months for it to appear. there is some DNA type test they are using now that can detect the presence of the virus much faster, but that still is not 100% accurate.

scary shit. i am very scared of viruses...all of them. i have a friend that does HIV and verious other infectious disease resaerch...scary scary shit. one of the many reasons i have not have sex with many people at all...well that and i am one of those sex with out love is bad type people. there is not an orgasm worth dying over...and all the money in the world or a job would not be worth dying over in my book.

I wonder what it is going to be like in LA when all of these unemployed porn workers have nothing to do. The coffee shops will be filled with them.

From what it seems like in that article, Condom scenes don't sell as well as "no condom" scenes. And they may have to do all condom scenes from now on. I'm not particularly surprised at this though; with the volumous output the porn industry achieves, it was never a matter of if this would happen, just a matter of when. Testing is all after the fact, and the emergance of the virus in the person, even if it goes without being caught for a month is too much of a timeframe to gamble with.

Texas brought up the cumshot issue as well. Much of today's porn seems to have this finishing move in it, and there's even special fetishes that specifically cum inside the female preformers. seems to me the industry got too cocky (pun intended) and forgot the dangerous gamble they were wagering.

It's kind of ironic that this news comes a week after Ashcroft delcared war on the industry. Whether this will cause the industry to move off the radar, or just give Ashcroft's censorship teams more incentive to throw pornographers in jail remains to be seen.

I don't see this as a fluke though. it was bound to happen, I'm actually surprised it didn't happen sooner. maybe it did, and no one has caught it medically yet? In any case it's a tragic consequence for these people.

You do realize that HIV is not all that contagious? It is not like a cold or a flu virus. I think it quite possible that no one else got infected.

seriously. not only is a healthly for the stars, but it also would be a huge promotion for safe sex. imagine how nice it would be if some guy was giving you crap about condoms and you could be like, "honey, even porn stars use them. get over it. put a condom on. and give it to me."

I've seen quite a few pornos where they use condoms...*cough* Several actually, but they were all gay porn. This just strikes me as odd, since (being the Pervy McPerv that I am) all the porn I watch is guy on guy and they almost ALWAYS use condoms, so I just thought they used them in most porn flicks now...

Guess I was just naive? surreal

This has happened before (Marc Wallace in '99, I believe) and it was a big deal then too. But like everything, money is more important than peoples health and the shit will be back in full swing before too long. After the last time, some companies went condom only, but there will always be people willing to risk their lives to make a buck.
