Okay, so I'm out of the loop on all the hip slang you youngsters use. Help me out here. What is a "boi"?

For a while there, I thought it was just from that Avril Lavigne song. Then I thought it was just some fun misspelling of "boy" (like "grrrrl" or "gurl" is for "girl"). I've seen it in people's names around SG, and I've seen girls refer to their boyfriends as "bois." Then today, I read this line in a Dan Savage article (Dan Savage being a sex columnist who seems to always know what's going on in the world): "Most gay men want to be with other men, not with trannies, bois, the intersexed, or legal women who can pass for bi males."

Does "boi" have some sort of sexual meaning? I mean, Dan Savage put it in there with "trannies" and "the intersexed." Or does it really just mean "boy"? I looked it up in Wikipedia, and all I got was some entry about a Celtic tribe. I asked the almighty Google, and Google spit out some rubbish about the Boise International Airport, the Bank of Ireland, and some investment opportunity in Thailand. surreal So now I'm asking the collective consciousness of SG to define it for me, once and for all!

no way, boi is a term mostly used among the male homosexual gay community to denote homosexuality. so... if you were to see a screen name alabamaboi or something to that effect, he would probably be gay. unless he was trying to tap into a trend he knew nothing about smile

Then why would Dan Savage, a gay man involved in the "gay scene" use it to describe a kind of person gay men wouldn't usually get sexually involved in? (Trannies, bois, women who pass as men...)

ok kiddos...there are lots of different people that use the term BOI to identify themselves.

-lesbian butch gals (sometimes into the leather lifestyle)
-girls that feel they are transgendered and identify as boys
-and most recently i have heard punk/goth boys identify themselves as bois.

i belive there are others that use this term too..but i cannot remember em off the top of my head.

ha! good question! I've used the word boi, i think i even used iit n somebody's comments yesterday.

i kind of like it as a spelling--- i don't know why ---but my assumption was that had its origins within the skinhead community. Boi, as in Oi Boi. Or something confused

See, I WOULD get it, if there weren't 20 other people in this thread telling me different things about its meaning, and a respected sex columnist using it in the same sentence as "trannies" and "bi females who can pass as male."

i use "boi" in the context of "alternative guy for whom i have affection." the difference in spelling is also used to show that he isn't actually a boy-child, but that he also doesn't carry himself in a way usually identified with "man." so, my freaky boyfriend could be called "my boi." (and then there would be no confusion whether it's my child or my boyfriend.)

"boi" does not equal "twink."
this, of course, is the use of the word "boi" in the midwest. might be different in other places.

In my experience, 'boi' is to 'boy' and 'grrl' is to 'girl'.
