so, i'm sitting in front of the computer doing homework, and i'm ridiculous tired. i decide to go to bed and do more work tomorrow. i go and lie down, and instantly i'm awake. i try and do relaxation exercises, clear my mind, but it just doesn't work. eventually i get back up, and here i am.

this doesn't only happen when i have something pressing to do, though. it happens practically every night.

happen to anybody else? ever found anything that helps?

sigh. frown

I'm awake still. I was up until 3 last night. I'll get started doing something and then get tired but as soon as I give up and lie down, I have to get back up and finish it.

I dunno exactly what to do about it... It's most sucktastic.

if you don't have to be up super early and you take it well enough in advance so its already started working before you hit the sheets, it can be okay. but no i dont reccommend taking a whole dose of nyquit at 1 am when you have to be up at six.

it usually makes me more energetic. sometimes i'll do it right before i want to fall asleep and it works like a charm, but usually it makes me want to get up and do something.

If it makes you want to get up and make sammiches, or pizza I just might have to propose to you. I could offer you nothing but moral support from the couch when you make said sammiches or pizza. Hope you doin't mind supporting me and my ravenous eating habits. smile

Regular exercise can help. Pleasuring reading can as well. I wouldn't try warm milk. Lactose is a sugar and a stimulant, so it is a little conter-productive. The ritual of relaxing with a warm beverage is what makes people feel sleepy, so I suggest a night time tea, preferably one with valerian and/or kava kava. Oh, if you do exercise, finish at least three hours before you want to go to bed. Hope this helps.

Melatonin is natural (it's produced by your body when it's time to sleep). You can find it in pretty much any drug aisle. Just take 3mg, and you'll be out in twenty minutes. You won't wake up drugged or "hungover", even if you only get six hours of sleep, but you WILL have weird dreams.

My other trick is to drink something warm (make sure it's decaf!) Your body temperature raises a bit when it's sleepytime, so this is one way to trick your body into relaxing.

I can't sleep without white noise. It covers up the "quiet" and keeps me from waking up to every little car, siren, bird, screaming child, etc. Maybe try a fan on a low setting?

I had insomnia for 6 months. It seemed nothing I did helped me sleep. I tried every over the counter product (yes, even Ny-Quill) and none of them had any affect. After 6 months of sleeping a couple hours every 3-5 days I gave in and went to the doctor for fear of death. I went through a couple different prescriptions before one actually worked. It seems my body takes some downers, and has a reversal effect. Things that should make me sleep actually wake me up sometimes. I found out after the ordeal that I'm not the only one this applies to, so don't be suprised if those Tylenol PM don't knock you out. I ended up getting a prescription for (lipstick red) secanols and they kicked my ass to sleep in a way I never thought possible.

I'm one of the people that honestly HATES using pills but after I get so tired I was seeing shit all the time, that all kinda went out the window.

Also, if you have roommates, telling them "Shut the FUCK UP, I'm trying to SLEEP!" once in a while never hurts matters.

not true... myth. But it also depends what you're doing. Your body will show the wear and tear from lack of sleep regardless what its from, and then react with drowsiness, sickness, etc... Meth is supposed to keep you up, so it does, but your body will try to get back the time... coke, same thing... mj helps ME sleep... shrooms don't have much effect.... acid makes dreams fun, so why not try and sleep?... alcohol'll put you right out!

There you go! sleep-n-drugs 101

I second the fan, preferably the oscillating variety. Just kind of zone out to it and the next thing you know you'll be asleep.

I am also an insomniac... yet in an odd manner. I can rarely ever sleep of my own volition. I usually just wait till I've stayed up long enough to pass out. and I am talking sometimes 2 days here. However... once i get to sleep, BAM i'm out for a while. A long time. Once I slept a full 22 hours... I was actually gonna go for the entire 24, but I woke up without being able to fall back asleep.
So... I busy myself with many fun things. I read more now (currently working on "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and the real "Grimm's Fairy Tales"). I watch more classy movie (i.e. Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky" is my film for tonight). And I make sure to work in my music studio for an extra two hours.

Seems like a lot. But if you keep yourself busy, insomnia can be a blast AND productive.

Reading always makes me sleepy, thanks to conditioning. I used to read every night before bed. Now, even if I read in mid-afternoon, I get sleepy. It really sucks when you're an English major. confused

A good dose of valium never did anyone "no harm." I used to be an incurable insomniac - was prescribed countless sleep aids to no avail. The cure ended up being rather basic...I fell in love and finally fell asleep in his arms.
But if that isn't an option - valium always came through for me.
