This used to happen to me all the time when I lived in my old apartment but in my current house, I never see them. Is there a certain place that you always see them.

On a somewhat related sidenote, I used to seemingly wake in the middle of the night completely paralyzed but with my eyes open. I would see a large floating black presence hovering over me, slowly coming closer. Eventually I would fall back into normal sleep and have horrible nightmares for the rest of the night. This used to happen to me all the time but it's been a while since I've experienced it.

WTF?!?

I guess the scouts from the planet Zoltar are growing more and more bold with each passing day.

Or, you know, it's just a hypnagogic dream state, something that most people experience at least once in their lives.

What you describe is a form of narcalepsy. My friend Anthony has it and until he was about 23 he thought he was haunted. His visitors change thru time but he always has the paralysis. It has something to do with the dreaming part of your mind being active but your body is in shut down mode so you dont move around while you sleep (sleepwalking is kind of the reverse of this) there is often a feeling of not being able to breath. do a google search on the night hag. thats what the phenomena is called.. people over the years have had all kinds of visions with it. usually some kind of hag but there have also been, demons, witches, alien abductions and all kinds of ghosts and shadows. Its really fucked up and I got really fascinated by it when he first told me . thats how I know

This happens to me, mostly late at night when I really need to go to sleep. It's just your peripheral vision fucking with you. Blame lighting, floaters in your eye, sleep deprivation, an overactive imagination, etc.

Of course, a similar thing ended up with an embarrassed me and an amused roommate when we first moved into this place. I was walking back from the bathroom to my bedroom. We have a VERY old house, built in 1871. I glanced back behind me as I was walking through the living room and saw a person sneaking up on me from the shadows near the kitchen.

I whirled to face them and started to yell, "WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU GET OUT OF MY HOUSE RIGHT FUCKING NOW," but I only got as far as, "WHO THE," before I realized it was MY shadow on the kitchen door, cast from the lamp in my roommate's bedroom.

*sigh*

My adrenalin stopped pumping about two hours later.

Even though I know the science behind it, those stories scare THE LIVING SHIT out of me. The name "Night Hag" doesn't make it any easier.

Now that reminds me of the "Bell Witch". I'm never getting to sleep. blackeyed

what about when you are asleep and you feel someone in the room and you wake up and no one is there, so you roll over and go back to sleep, then about 10 minutes later you get slapped but your the only one in the room?

If this ever happens I'm checking myself in for observation.

that only happened in the house i lived in in new jersey, between me telling my friends that and the location of the house it kept alot of people from visiting after sundown. cuase you see my house was built way back when and still had a dirt floor basement, plus the fact you could see at least 3 graveyards with more then 9 total within a ten minute walk from my front door. sure they were small in size but it still freaked people out. like one time i went on vacation and let a friend stay there cuase he was fighting with his wife he only stayed one night cuase he got the wake up slap and heard something run down the stairs. he quickly made up with his wife and just came over to check my mail and stuff after that

EDIT: I did offer my explanation, somehow missing the 80 people who had already explained it a lot better than me...

On my sidenote, if I'm tired, I hallucinate all the time; I've seen the various shadowy people at the edge of my vision, as well as various other things that weren't there.

Jesus. When I saw the topic Shadow People I felt like I swallowed my heart.
I thought "the topic isn't really going to be about seeing shadow people - its going to be a band or a movie or something" but then it was. I see little things scurrying like spiders or rats (not my pet rats - blurrry run across the room shadow rats) all the time then sometimes bigger ones like cats and then when I'm stressed or haven't slept I see the shadow people. I met a woman who was schizophrenic who saw them too so I got pretty worried. I guess I'm glad its commonish?

Well that's a sleepless night for me. I do get the varmints now and again - mostly when I'm extremely sleep deprived.

What's weird about that for me is I never had that kind of thing until I moved to Newfoundland and it happened a bunch of times and everyone there was like "oh thats just the hag" and it never happened since I left there either. I'm glad. It was terrifying.
But I still see shadow people.
