Self improvement is mastubation.

Every morning, the samurai of fifty or sixty years ago would bathe, shave their foreheads, put lotion in their hair, cut their fingernails and toenails rubbing them with pumice and then with wood sorrel, and without fail pay attention to their personal appearance. It goes without saying that their armor in general was kept free of rust, that it was dusted, shined, and arranged.

Although it seems that taking special care of one's appearance is similiar to showiness, it is nothing akin to elegance. Even if you are aware you may be struck down today and are firmly resolved to an inevitable death, if you are slain with an unseemly appearance, you will show your lack of precious resolve, will be despised by your enemy, and will appear unclean. For this reason it is said that both old and young should take care of their appearance. - Hagakure

Cultrual and historical differences are masturbation.

well. the internet doesn't really allow for the full context of my statement.. so I have to really agree in a blanket fashion. There is taking care of yourself: you brush your teeth, you shower, you get your hair cut when you need it. Sometimes you spoil yourself with a manicure, you enjoy a back massage.. all these are good things. Then there is: you buy every cream and powder you can buy, you want to be younger, you want to be slimmer, you want perfection, you don't accept who you are. That voice in the mirror that tells you that you're ugly.. that's advertising. That's an image obsessed society. To me, it's bullshit.

yeah but we're not necessarily talking about people who are obsessed with how they look and feeling bad about themselves. so a girl puts some cover up and mascara on in the morning, and it makes her feel more confident and improves her appearance a little. so a guy puts a little product in his hair and puts on an outfit that he thinks looks good on him. what is so wrong with these things?

obviously the obsession with anti-aging, rail thinness, having every latest trend when it comes out, having shelves full of useless products, is ridiculous. but does that girl putting on some mascara after she brushes her teeth necessarily tell you that she is incredibly insecure? i don't think so.

putting a little though into your appearance, in proportion, isn't the worst thing ever, and i don't think it means you are worried everyone hates you or anything.

Yep I agree with the spirit 0f what you're saying. I put product in my hair every now and again. And I think my jeans and tshirts always look good together. Hell, I cook like a motherfucker if you beg me to. But we're talking about full blown metrosexuals.. and to me, they're image obsessed and insecure.

well... i guess there's different definitions of metrosexual.

if it's a narcisstic obsession with appearance then obviously that's not cool at all.

i just like to think of it as more like... a guy that's a little feminine, and secure in that. like all my boyfriend's friends call him 'faggy', but he just likes to make fancier food and he likes shopping and whatnot and he's just a little more 'hip' than his other friends. and they call him faggy for that. that's what i think of when ihear metrosexual.

but i guess it has connotations other than that which are indeed negative...

but i don't think there's anything wrong with a guy having an interest in things that are traditionally viewed as more feminine. however, an unhealthy obsession with one's self and one's appearance is bad no matter what sex it is.

No, it was invented by people who were tired being called wussies, pussies, pretty boys, and fags (and I don't mean to offend anyone at all when saying this).

If you're so insecure about your own "Self-Image" that you need to invent some bullshit "Identity" to make your self feel better, then you're hopeless anyway, and no amount of pomade or vintage clothing is going to make you cool.

"Metrosexual" is a bullshit identity for insecure people who are afraid of other people's opinions.

You're all wrong, actually. "Metrosexual" was introcuced by writer Mark Simpson in an article he wrote for Salon.com. Here's his definition:

"The typical metrosexual is a young man with money to spend, living in or within easy reach of a metropolis -- because that's where all the best shops, clubs, gyms and hairdressers are. He might be officially gay, straight or bisexual, but this is utterly immaterial because he has clearly taken himself as his own love object and pleasure as his sexual preference. Particular professions, such as modelling, waiting tables, media, pop music and, nowadays, sport, seem to attract them but, truth be told, like male vanity products and herpes, they're pretty much everywhere."

Personally I find it hard to be down on guys who spend so much time and effort on their personal appearance when I think goth girls are so hot!

I liken the metrosexual to the female body builder. While there is nothing wrong with a woman who is healthy and physically fit, who works out and builds muscle mass, there is something aesthetically unappealing when taken to the extreme. She looks masculine. To me, all of the lifestyle characteristics of the metrosexual man make him look feminine. ~ Stacey Pressman, Page 2. ESPN.com

I thought that it was put pretty well here. There is nothing wrong with a guy who takes care of himself, but there is a line to be crossed.

Uh... because people who call themselves metrosexual don't get called those names anymore? Anyone who would call someone a "pretty boy" or "fag" will just find the term "meterosexual" as more ammunition.

Either way labels are dumb, especially ones that make no sense. Heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual... those pretty much cover everything in our binary male/female evolution. What the hell makes "meterosexuals" not fit into one of these?

Actually, you've all missed the point about metrosexuals.

They're not really guys who spend a lot of time shopping and preening and making themselves look 'hip' and 'together.'

Really, a metrosexual is someone who has sexual intercourse with cities. In which case, call me a metrosexual, baby, cuz me and Altoona, PA got BUSY last night!!
