That was really well put as everyone has said. I never have understood why ppl don't realize they aren't going to get along or agree with everyone in their lifetime. I'm so laid back...shit I'm glad I'm like that. Screw being high strung and being offended by things so easily.

I recently enjoyed an article in the school paper where one of the student reps emphatically apologized for calling someone a bitch. I could understand him issuing an apology for, say, I dunno, mass murder, setting the kindergarden on fire, or defenestrating the entire volunteer service club, but saying that he felt 'Deeply apologetic' for reffering to someone as a bitch struck me as rather... silly.

Maybe it was satire.

I know this is months out of date.

I go to a liberal college. They take diversity seriously, and are quick to tell everyone so. Rigorus legal action is pursued whenever someone drunkenly scrawls "Faqs R Bad" in a bathroom. Satire woud get you burned at the stake here, but not literally, because that would probably offend a Wiccan.

The irony of this situation is it took me until about halfway down the first page 15 or 16 posts to realise that this was 19 months old.

The more things change...

I am so hard to offend it shocks people.
Why let yourself get that worked up about something/someone that you really can't do much about.

Nothing offends me.

Fucking nothing.

Unless you're so socially challenged that you might say something that no person on this planet might find acceptable. Like if I were babysitting a family-friend's kids, and you come up to us talking about how you want to do bad things to these children...

I guess that's about as close to actually being offended I ever see myself getting...

Actually... I wouldn't get "offended", I'd probably get "offensive" and end up putting that fucking in the hospital...

I dunno. I got what I like to refer to as a "Universal Sense of Humour" (and yeah, humour with a "u", I'm Canadian)! I laugh at fucking everything, that isn't considered a completely critical situation (i.e. - person in medical emergency, animal being tortured, etc.). If you knew me in person, I guess you'd know what I'm talking about...

I'm not really an "optimist", but more or a "positive realist". I don't make the best of every situation and see everything as positive like an optimist would, but more benefit from every situation, good or bad, for future reference as to how to prevent or repeat such things.

Annikaizella and PinkPunk13 could back that up, I'm sure...

So go ahead, try to offend me. biggrin

I dare you. ARRR!!!

I can't figure out what this says

He is saying that he doesn't understand why some people can't accept the fact that they will have to deal with unpleasant things in their life.

Some people believe that they should be able to go through life without experiencing the slightest bit of inconvenience or offense...and cannot handle it when they are confronted with such a situation.

i think a lot of this "you offend me" crap started with the pc'isation that's been going on. for crap's sake, they're calling pump jockeys "fuel transfer technicians" now! i work at cumby's and when i applied i put "clerk" down on that little position wanted line. the manager told me that they don't say "clerk" or "cashier". i am a 'customer service associate'. oh i'm sorry! someone didn't want to have to say that they're a fucking clerk? the whole offended culture is nothing but a detriment to those of us who believe in freedom of choice and speech.

another excellent cash thread.

so i was thinking about this today and its driving me nuts.
i get harassed all day on my walk to work and it really doesn't bother me... but this one thing irks me so bad. i'm apologize in advance but i just gatta let it out right here. please i'm sorry.

what really offends me is when when someone is offended and then people rally around what they know is fucking shitty point of veiw.

it brings any community down. i just have to say something.
someone says something really fucking shitty, instead of making harmony people will say anything to justify those shitty words. they know its fucking shit.

i'm so brave and i'm so independant i really cannot understand why people would side up with someone elses garbage. fear? pride? am i not old enough to understand? am i not bitter enough?

i....
don't
understand....

alt. culture is so popular but people still refuse to think for themselves.
WHY?! why does this bother me so fucking much when i'm not even the one offended??

anyhow if your one of these people you proably know who you are
have fun eating shit.

There is a great book out right now called My Bad:25 Years of Public Apologies and the Appalling Behavior That Inspired Them It deals with the over use of apologies in our culture. A very funny and insightful read. I recommend it.

As to what is offensive. I think context is key. If you are on the Sex board and get offended, it is ridiculous. I find Republicans ethos on general to be offensive. But I am not going to be offended by them if I go to their convention. I put myself in there presence so I will suck it up.

The only things I really find offensive are deep heartfelt racism and bigotry. That and anything vicious towards children, but that is a given.

The real difference is how you react to these things. I don't wine in general about things that are offensive. If we are having a forum, I will debate you. But to try to stop your god given right to be an asshole, I will not do.

That said Cash, I DID find your multiple defenses of Ashlee Simpson the other day pretty offensive!

I guess I don't get what you mean by being offended. Do you mean a person who dislikes something and whines about it?
Because many things offend me to my core. I expect them to be all around me. I register complaint at the proper moment (ie.the voting booth, CE debates)
I need this to be better defined. Right now, your definition sounds like you want it to apply to the overly PC sensibility that smothers our culture,
But does that mean you don't car about racism, rape and kicking babies?

This thread is so good.

When I was growing up, my mother was offended by pretty much everything in the outside world (my dad was a minister), but her favorite tv shows (which we were also allowed to watch) were SCTV, and Benny Hill. She is first generation Canadian, her parents were working class poor English.

It makes perfect sense when I look back at it now, but it seemed strange that we could watch those shows but if Michael on Knightrider grabbed a chick's ass my mom would throw a fit and turn the channel.

That is pretty strange , especially in connection to Benny Hill ! Tons of ass grabbing there for sure .
I get offended by people who have opinions / beliefs , but then can come up with no good argument for them . I may get worked up about other things , but not really offended .

By "offended" I mean the outward whinging & calls to action over something that really doeasn't warrant it. I strongly dislike the overly-sensitive way that people react to things. Like I said in the original post...Your natural reaction to something may be to feel offended, and that's ok. However, the over-the-top shenanigans that follow are, in my opinion, ridiculous.

So yes...it's the overly-PC garbage that irks me. It's peoples' sense of entitlement...that they should never have to face anything unpleasant...that bothers me.

See, being offended grants you special priviledges. If you say "I don't like X" then no one has to respect your opinion and is free to ignore you. If you say "X offends me", then people who don't care that you're offended are bad people.
