A teacher is under fire in Queensland, Australia for assigning 11th-grade students to compose their own suicide note.

QUEENSLAND education authorities have apologised after year 11 students were asked to write a suicide note.

The students at Windaroo Valley State High School, south of Brisbane, were also asked to discuss A Prayer Before Birth, a poem by Louis MacNeice about an unborn child facing abortion.

"The intention of it was to relay all the wonderful things about being alive and growing up," a spokesman for Education Queensland said.

they were high school kids not middle schoolers.

and i don't see why they would be angry or upset with her. i would be more upset that they were discussing anything that had to do with prayer in school.

it was a creative writing assignment. how is this any different than being assigned to write your own obiturary like we did in 11th grade?

wow. just....wow.

when I was in high school, I wrote a 3 page paper for a creative writing project in my gifted class. I wrote it from the perspective of someone who had committed suicide....what they might be thinking...seeing, all that. it was about 20 minutes after I turned it in that I was hauled to the principle's office and my parent's were called. I had to spend the rest of the day convincing a roomful of adults that I wasn't thinking about killing myself - that it was just CREATIVE WRITING.

though....I think that article means 11th graders, not 11 year olds.

Yeah, I had to write my own obit. in several different grades. High-school juniors certainly have the maturity to grasp a topic like this. I think I probably wrote a real suicide not in the 11th grade. Ah, angst-ridden teen melodrama...

I concur. It may sound stupid, but this is just a lawsuit waiting to happen. If any of these kids ever commit suicide, the teacher and school district will be on the hook for it. I dont care if its 5, 10, 15 years later, they will be called on the carpet for it. I dont agree with this sentiment, but Its the truth.

I don't think it really matters how old you are. People of all ages commit suicide, so saying that they're high schoolers doesn't mean shit really.

And I would take an F on that paper anyway. When you *truly* just wanna die.. You don't bother writing no suicide note.

Right. So all suicide notes lying with corpses are just for show?

Thats not what I mean. But I would say the majority of notes are not written by people who just wanted to die.

Ok.. a lot of people (or try to) kill themselves for reasons other than they just wanna die and end their suffering. For twisted ideas of revenge, attention, the fact that some people feel that the only thing in their life that they have any control over is their death, or to *try* to gain some kind of legendary status. That might sound dumb, but Michael Hutchence WAS quoted as saying that Cobain killing himself was genius. A pity if that why either of them did it..

But look, to me, for someone really serious about offing themself, its just more trouble than its worth. If there was something that important to say or do still, perhaps I would be forced to reconsider whether or not I really wanna kill myself.. and ultimately not end up dead, and having left a note behind.
