Parents weren't rich, but you sure as hell didn't have to share bath water, wear hand-me-downs, ride the bus everywhere. Certainly not rich, but definitely not poor or hurting.

I myself grew up in a single-parent middle-class household. You?

My parents' combined income was always between 35 and 55k, and this was in the 80's and 90's. So I guess I oscillated between lower and middle middle class.

Currently I live and hang out with former rich kids, though. The funny thing is, most people don't think they were rich unless they were really, really rich - like if their parents had a combined income of at least 200k in those decades.

So important differences often get glossed over. For instance, the leap between 40k and 80k is fucking gigantic, but almost everyone whose parents made either of those amounts calls herslef middle class. To me, especially in the worse off times, the people at the high end of the 40/80 divide seemed like they had tons and tons more cash than my folks did.

My parents were both graduate students, so money was light. I lived.

A-yup. That would be me.
Not hurting, but not "well off."
I went to a private school, but only because my grandparents picked up the tab.

im an only child, my parents both worked all the time but never seemed to make much money, maybe 20-25k/year. we had meat twice a week, i rode the bus to school every day, got new clothes twice a year (before school started and christmas). in retrospect, id say we were fairly poor, but we were happy and i never cared. i did go to college though, and i sure learned to never spend money frivolously.

We were so poor that for Christmas one year all we got was a stick of gum. I was the youngest so by the time it got to me all the flavor was chewed out.

My mother hates it when I tell that story, "We were never that poor!" Now she's used to it and adds "You got a tic-tac of your own."
