I'm now in such a sad and depressed mood for two days, and have now Idea what could help. The only thing that helped my sometimes is to go to Zurich and see down from Uetliberg to City. But its to far, to you there everytime when I'm sad.
You might consider applying to join the Depression Outlet group. They often discuss such topics.
There are several other SG groups that might also be of interest. Most of these are private groups, due to the sensitive or personal subject matter, so you'll have to apply to join them.
If I'm feeling depressed, it sometimes helps me to go for a walk outside, if it's during the day. Walking in the woods or another natural area, or a park, is preferable for this. Or sometimes I watch cartoons.
Another idea: If you can do something to help somebody else in some way, that might cheer you up, or at least take your mind off your own thoughts for a while.
Of course, someone who is feeling extremely depressed, or depressed for long periods of time, should probably talk to a therapist about it, if at all possible.
Get out of the house and go somewhere. Sitting and letting your mind continue the mood just makes things worse. This is generally how my wife breaks depressive cycles for me.

Sleep. I find that sleepiness can exacerbate depressive moods, especially if your brain chemistry is naturally prone to them. Being well rested helps in that regard.
Of a side note, doing cardio and exercise also helps. For one, getting a decent workout releases endorphins in your brain, usually putting a person in a better mood, and secondly, cardio exercise helps you sleep better and stay more energetic, going back to the beginning of my post
In the summer go for a good hard dirtbike ride. In the winter, and I know this is going to sound odd, but icefishing. Nothing clears your head like sitting on a frozen lake for hours trying in vain to catch a few fish.
Get lots of sunlight, have a good cry and watch stupidly sappy love movies. I hate Love Actually but the world always feels like a better place after I watch it. Being immersed in nature can help a lot too. Seeing the simplicity of life can release a lot of stress.
I think, the one thing that has drawn me back from the brink, time and again, is simple curiosity: I want to see what happens next. So, when I get depressed, I concentrate on finding something new, something interesting, some place to explore.
Webcomics, good food, exercise (biking in particular makes me feel so much better), getting out of the house, netflix, and good food. Now when I say good food, I mean making myself a really nice meal that I wouldn't normally make. Oh....also good sex. Stressing the word good.
