The bar I've decamped in to watch election coverage has decided to turn off the television, now that CNN has declared for Obama. A very large, very drunk man is singing Queen's “We Are The Champions” quite badly. Every one is cheering madly.
Fox News' homepage has this headline:
You can almost hear the sobbing behind it. Early reports say Dick Morris has hanged himself in the Fox News studio. Or maybe I just fantasized that. Romney Central is angrily tweeting that every one should just chill the fuck out because they're disputing Ohio.
And reality.
Running through it, it was a very good night to be on this side of history. Todd “Legitimate Rape” Akin lost the Missouri Senate race to Claire McCaskill. Elizabeth Warren defeated Scott Brown in Massachusetts. Tammy Baldwin will represent Wisconsin in the Senate and become the first openly gay Senator in history. Tim Kaine won over George “Macaca” Allen. Linda McMahon outspent Democrat Chris Murphy 4-to-1 in Connecticut and lost.
Same sex marriage ballots are being decided in Maine, Maryland, and Washington and early reports look good, but I can't find any more information because someone is singing “Afternoon Delight” really loudly and the one earbud I have in to listen to Fox News is just sounding like torrents of weeping. Seriously, looks like same-sex marriage with be legal in Maine and Maryland and Colorado has legalized marijuana.
There's a long week ahead, surely some races will be contested or recounted. At the moment only Ohio is being disputed by the Romney campaign, but the Electoral College math looks to be such that even if Ohio were to flip for Romney it would not be enough to overcome Obama's lead. The New York Times is currently calling Ohio for Romney and still has Obama up 285 over Romney's 200.
As of midnight, Election Day 2012, it's clear that Barack Obama will be reelected President, the Democrats will continue to hold the Senate, the Republicans will continue to hold the House, and Colorado will be the new preferred vacation spot over California.
God bless America, I knew you wouldn't let me down.
As a disabled veteran I'd like to congratulate Tammy Duckworth for defeating that piece of crap Joe Walsh.
I'm editing myself here by using piece of crap instead of how I really feel.
So are you folks going to still blame Bush 4 years from now when the economy is even worst, you're paying more taxes than ever, and the reality of Obamacare finally sinks in? Or perhaps after 8 years of Obama you'll FINALLY be able to admit he wasn't ever that great a president to begin with and be ready to properly assign some responsibility.
Can hardly wait to see what excuses you folks come up with 4 years from now as you look to the next democrat to fill your pockets with gold. Welcome to the U.S.S.A.

I was twenty years old on the morning of September 11th, 2001.
I will probably blame Bush for any and everything for the rest of my life. Fuck that guy. Hope that clears up my editorial position.

We're still dealing with global issues started by European colonialism. Blaming a guy who went anal, sans lube, on the country for 8 years JUST FOUR YEARS AGO for problems he left behind (wars, deficits, stuff like that) isn't that much of a stretch.

Given my beat, I concern myself far more with the mass politicization of the levers of government by the Bush Administration. I've been half-heartedly complaining for a while now that the sort of horserace blogging I set out to do this election cycle is really useless and potentially damaging to our Democracy. Because, really, at some point you have to stop worrying about how to fuck your political opposition in the lungs and start worrying about how to work with them.
Now, all you need to know to know that Rove and W. failed in their goal is in the election results of 2006, '08, & this past Tuesday. But that culture, that politics doesn't even stop at the water's edge, much less anywhere else, is in full force in the House Majority of John Boehner. It's one reason why David Frum was fired for having the audacity to suggest that GOP legislators work with Obama on healthcare reform instead of vowing to kill it--because rightwing media and think-tanks are outside observers influencing the party, they're messaging arms of the GOP. It's why we've had over thirty votes to repeal Obamacare and no serious compromise on getting jobs bills or additional stimulus passed. It's why Issa's investigations into Benghazi and Fast & Furious don't offer any insight into whatever failings the Administration may, actually, be guilty of, because they're just political witch hunts designed to ensure Obama wouldn't get reelected. It's why, in part, there's no room to talk about serious policy issues, because it's all politics and campaigning all the time. It's why Mitt Romney has to be at least a little relieved, because after Tuesday he can take a break from running for President non-stop for the past eight years. Because campaigns never end, and there is no time or place where an elected official stops campaigning and starts thinking about how to best govern. And a lot of that, at least in the modern GOP, is due to George W. Bush and Karl Rove.
