Special characters are easy on Macs...

An accent is Option-E then the letter: é
An umlaut is Option-U then the letter: ü

And the other vowels do other things. Windows is harder you have to write the ASCII code after pressing the Alt key, unless you get a utility to switch to a foreign keyboard.

When I want to post or e-mail something with special characters, I type the whole thing in Word, and then copy and paste.

In Word, you just do control - apostrophe or control (that thing under the tilde - the "accent grave") or control - colon -- and then the letter.

ü

Not too pratctical in AIM though...

I've gotten points taken off of German papers in the past because of a lack of computer umlauts. frown Ich bin sehr traurig gewesen.

Here are some instructions for typing accents in Windows.

link

This works, but it's not something you want to leave your keyboard set to all the time, because it turns your quote keys into accent-making-keys. So if you want to type actual quotation marks, you have to also hit the space bar of all things, and that's annoying.

And the easy way is to use the proper key mapping for the language, in Windows I usually have the french canadian, english and one of the german keymaps installed, then alt-shift to switch between them. Of course, I use a Mac at home so...
