Or any other genital piercings for women. "Piercing" was added to a bill outlawing femal genital mutilation in the state, and is punishable by up to 20 years in jail, and the house passed it 160-0 with no debate.

Amendment sponsor Rep. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, was slack-jawed when told after the vote that some adults seek the piercings.

"What? I've never seen such a thing," Heath said. "I, uh, I wouldn't approve of anyone doing it. I don't think that's an appropriate thing to be doing."

The ban applies only to women, not men. The bill has already been approved by the Senate but now must return to that chamber because of the piercing amendment. Both chambers of the Legislature must agree on a single version of a bill before it can go to the governor for final approval.

Story here.

Whether or not he personally approves of such an action should have no bearing on another's choice.

Apparently not. Maybe their jails are empty so they decided to fill them up with people who commit the horrible crime of...nothing. The most bizzare and shocking part to me is the unanimous vote...NO dissent? surreal

I have but one question. If the bill goes into law, how will they inforce it when women get the piercings done out of state?

They can't and I don't think they would try. They are making the act of piercing illegal, not having one.

It won't affect out-of-state piercings. So, georgians will have to drive to south carolina to get pierced while South Carolinians are driving to Georgia to get tattoos (since those are illegal in SC). surreal

Without reading the text of the bill, I would have to argue that it isnt constitutional. You can have laws which distinguish between the sexes but they would be subject to an intermediate scrutiny of review. Ie. its ok to have single sex dorms at a state college but its not ok to only test women for HIV. Since this is a female only restriction without a compelling state interest, I would argue that it wouldnt stand up under the federal Constitution (and presumably under the Georgia Constitution as most of the state constitutions are similar to the federal).

First, the bill has not become law, yet. The Senate version of the bill does not have the piercing amendment. The House and Senate will have to reconcile the difference in the two bills before it can be sent to the governor.

Second, the piercing amendment is utter nonsense. It should be dropped.

Third, the bill started out with good intentions. The bill was to ban the religious practice of female genital mulitation by their fathers. There is nothing on the books that would prevent this abhorrent religious practice.

Fucking sexist motherfuckers.

Are the states REGRESSING? What's happening down there? Is there a fucking time warp? What's next after we can't control our own bodies? We lose the vote?

There are probably more unenforced laws on the books in the state of my nascence than enforced ones. Nice work fellas on number 89,754.*

Never attribute to maliciousness what can be ascribed to stupidity.

I'm think they were trying to be nice. Probably no one actually read the law (except the one twit who wrote the 'no piercings' part in) and were just told that it was a law banning female genital mutilation and they should vote for it.

Yeah...I'm sure for a lot of people voting on the bill it was a matter of "Well, this is an obvious choice...who would be caught dead opposing a bill against female genital mutilation?"

Poor guy, he's probably never seen a vagina, let alone knows what a clitoris is...hell, he's probably only had sex with his wife for procreation purposes and through a hole in a bed linen.

Cynical shit. There was this international movement around stopping female genital mutilation, predominantly to stop "cliterodectomies" (OK I don't know the real term) in African tribes... eg, stopping the predominant male culture from imposing their values on woman's bodies (some of the tribes think this will stop women from sexual pleasure and infidelity). Whether or not you agree with that... supremely cynical neo-fascist bullshit to apply the use the same "genital mutilation" battle cry in Georgia....
