NEWSWIRE

Los Angeles, CA

MAR 10, 2004 01:45 PM

Reuters has posted this news tidbit:

U.S. adolescents who pledge not to have sex until they are married have about the same rate of sexually transmitted diseases as other teenagers and they often fail to keep their pledge, according to a study released on Tuesday.

The study of a nationally representative sample of about 15,000 youths aged 12 to 18 found that 88 percent of teenagers who pledged to remain virgins until they are married ended up having sex before marriage

I am shocked. SHOCKED.

I haven't been a teen for a while, so I was surprised that sex is still a popular hobby for them!

the definition of 'newsworthy' takes yet another hit

How is it not "newsworthy"? There's group after group out there pushing an "abstience" agenda, trying to ban mention of contraception or condom use in school, and this is still more proof that that's a crock of shit.

The sad thing us, people who support the abstinance only programs don't seem to care or listen when they are shown EVIDENCE that they don't work.

i'll give you that - i guess where i was coming from was the "well, of course - how could anyone think anything else" school of thought. which often blinds me to the idiot things lots of people DO believe.

Well...I mean think about it, if something you practice is proven to be utterly wrong, it's kinda devistating to your entire life-style and thus hard to accept.

And why do they get std's? Because they are more likely to not use condoms. It also said *99 percent* who *didn't* take the pledge had sex before marriage.

That headline and the info posted above, in my opinion, doesn't seem to represent the point of the article very well.

The point of the article was that sex education works better than no sex education regarding condoms.

But the stats show by percentage of people in the group, not the actual number. In other words, if the numbers of abstinence pledgers group were the same an the non group, there would be less stds in their group.

The point wasn't that abstinence pledges don't work. It was that condom use should be taught no matter what your beliefs on premarital sex are.

I can't believe that any rational person thought 'abstinence only' education was actually going to work.

A bunch of hooey.

When I had a sex-ed class in high school, we had to take a quiz at the beginning of the course. One of the questions ask that we list the top five ways to prevent getting an STD. When it came time to read the answers out loud, and the teacher asked what the number one way to prevent STDs was, everyone said, loudly, "abstinence!" while I said "condoms." Thankfully, no one heard me. I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass. Abstinence just hadn't occured to me. That was awkward.

Yeah, but in this case people are getting diseases and dying because the people who push for less and less sex education don't like having their worldview challenged.

I waited until I was 17 and out of high school before I lost my virginity but not because a sign, some jesus loving crazy person told me to, or a pledge. I chose the right moment and time to give it up.

R00kers, I know you didn't direct that at me, I'm just using your quote to clear up *my* point. Which is, I agree with you that 'abstinence only' doesn't work.

But I felt like the headline and stuff posted was trying to say there was *no* form of abstinence that works and that's simply not true.

Abstinence education with condom education is going to win out over just condom education every time.

The parts about STD's and failing to keep the pledge should be reversed. That sentence is totally retarded.

This is sort of the definition of Fundamentalism, and Christian Fundamentalists tend to be the ones most prominently pushing the abstinence agenda. They don't care that people who don't follow their agenda get diseases and die. They get diseases and die because God hates them.

Eye-chee-waawa. I realize you're just making a point, but no, Christian fundamentalists do not think God hates anyone. Or at least it's not a patented part of the definition of being a person who takes all of the Bible literally.

On account of a bad rep and that there are likely no fundamentalists present, people understandably do not think to choose a different term. But just to clarify: christian fundamentalists = Bible literalists (Old and New Testament). I think you're talking about Bible-thumpers, or Calvinists maybe, or jerks.

There's quite a lot more to Fundamentalism than simple literal interpretation of the Bible. There are, to begin, the 5 fundamentals, as well as premillenialism, dispensationalism, etc. Fundamentalists actually do believe that non-believers are punished for their wrongdoings, with such things as plague, slavery, etc. Don't fuck with the Religion major.

Well holy shit. smile

I went to a church that considered itself fundamentalist on the basis that they believed that all of the Bible was meant to be taken literally. I don't know about the rest of the terms here and I do not know what they mean. (Unless "premillenial" refers to the rapture, in which case my church leaned towards premillenialism)

That said, even if a group believes that non-believers are punished for not believing in God, I don't think it follows directly that they think God hates non-believers. The way I have heard it phrased is that non-believers do not fall under God's protective grace, and since the planet is cursed with sin, they are left to Satan and his devices etc.

What are the five fundamentals? and I regret the debate that may follow this post.
