List em'!

I'm irrationally afraid of:
Nocking my teeth out
The tip of my dong touching the toilet water
Dogs (any size)
Having something/someone grab my ankles when I'm getting into bed
Getting food poisoning
Large crowds
Strangers touching me
Germs (I'm a closet germaphobe)
Elevators

I'm sure I'll think of more....

My two biggest and most serious phobias:

Flying (and this was way before Sept 11). I can't even get on a plane. I shake, sweat, hyperventilate, all that. The last time I flew was over a year ago, on a 45 min flight. When I got off the plane I was a complete mess. I refused to take the return flight and made my boy drive me the 4+ hours home. But he was happy to, b/c he saw how I was after flying.

The other one is death. Not much I can say there. But I'm ridiculously afraid of dying. Sometimes I wish I were religious and believed in an after-life so that I wouldn't be afraid of death.

You were probably just looking for lists, but there's my long ass post tongue

I have an almost debilitating fear of Dogs. I got attacked by two dogs when I was about 10 and I'm just flat out terrified by pretty much every dog now. My dog weighs 8 pounds so I know I can kick his ass if he decides to get all crazy on me, but big dogs like Rottwilers and Pit Bulls scare the shit out of me.

*shrug* can't really think of any irrational ones. the 2 phobias (i guess that's what they are) that i can think of are:

1) razor blades, but that phobia is kinda intentionally inflicted, to make sure i never use them to cut myself again confused and

2) being abandoned by the people i love. a phobia cause it's happened to me more than a few times frown

I dont think i've got any irrational ones anymore. but i used to.

When i was about 10 i was fishing and trying to pull the line in by hand when the fish took off. totally cut my hand all up. so when i started playing guitar i was totally paranoid of sliding my finger up on the high E string for fear that it'd slice right into it. i've gotten over that one though.

Aren't all fears irrational? Otherwise, you'd be able to talk yourself out of it.

I fear zombies and crane flies.

*shrug* i think fears that really are in the best interests of self preservation, like "fear of having a loaded gun to your head* aren't really irrational . . . i kinda view the 2 fears i listed in that category . . . well at least the razors one, i guess the fear of abandonment might be a bit irrational oink

I'm afraid that the laws of nature will cease to exist.

When I was younger, and swimming in the deep end, I used to get scared that the chemical reaction that made hydrogen and oxygen a liquid would just...reverse. And I would plummet to the bottom of the pool and crack open my skull and break all the bones in my body.

I am afraid of heights, but never in the normal sense. I am not afraid I will fall, or that I will be pushed, or anything of the sort. I do not doubt my climbing ability or my agility, though I probably should.

When I was in Ediburgh, there's a HUGE hill called Arthur's seat. There are places near the top where the grass is so soft, that I was afraid the solid ground would simply give way to nothingness, and that I'd fall straight to the center of the earth.

I'm bonkers.

I am afraid of:
finding dead bodies in public bathroom stalls, dark closets, murky water...of finding dead bodies
things grabbing my ankles while I am swimming and dragging me down
snapping my wrists if I try to do a cartwheel
the shower window at home
being pinned in a car and burning to death
cancer cancer cancer any kind of cancer
that everyone knows something that I don't and thats why they don't seem confused as often
nuclear war
mad cow disease
wow it just goes on and on...

monsters under my bed
people peeking on me in the college shower
being caught singing at the top of my lungs
the guinea pig peeing on me while i'm holding him
never finding new books to read
that sound people make when they click their nails, or grind their teeth. makes me sick...
tests (had one today, have one tomorrow. yuck)
people who don't like indie movies at all
bad poetry.

People hearing me pee
Sneezing and having snot or spit fly on to someone
Stubbing my toes

speaking/preforming in front of groups. A common fear, I know, but still irrational. Most audiences are pretty receptive and understanding, until they see your nervousness and fear, and then they eat you alive with their tittering derision.

Well...that's what my irrational fears tell me they'll do, anyway... whatever

no. not all fears are irrational. it is quite rational to fear many things.
fear is a function of our self-preservation instinct.

now, fearing zombies is irrational for certain...

i used to be extremely paranoid about people wanting to kill me. i guess i still kind of am, but not as much as i used to be.

never let your feet hang off the bed; someone might be hiding under it waiting to kill you

be aware when you're in the shower; someone might be waiting outside to kill you

always check your car; someone may be in it waiting to kill you

always open every door all the way; someone might be hiding behind it waiting to kill you

always shut the blinds/curtains at night; someone with red eyes might be standing outside watching you and waiting to kill you

don't walk too close to parked cars; someone might be under it waiting to grab your ankle and kill you

etc, etc, etc.
yes, i was (and still sort of am) totally convinced that there were always people hiding in my house and stuff, just waiting to kill me.

i'm also terrified of snakes, spiders, and anything that lives in the ocean (unless it's something cute like a dolphin or a seal,etc).....

i forgot about clowns. they're scary. and those dolls whose eyes open when you turn them the right way.

Never underestimate zombies.

I hate popsicle sticks and coffee stirrers and green peppers (I like all the other colors) and the sound of those hand vacuum cleaners.

Germophobic people make me nervous because I am SO not scared of germs. I never get infections or am hardly ever sick and think most of it is psychosematic. Not that I walk around with poo on my hands or anything.... biggrin

I think English is vague. By fear, do you mean something that triggers the fight-or-flight response? If so, mightn't you say that many fears transcend rational and irrational for we never had to be taught them (that is, they're a function of our instincts)? Must all fears be rational or irrational? This intrigues me now.

i think it can be as simple as knowing with certainty that you are going to die or be seriously hurt. it is rational to fear such a situation.
are you speaking of it being logical or not? because fear IS illogical. for that matter, can you actually separate rationality (or irrationality) from instinct..? primal instinct, certainly...but one could argue that everything we do is instinctual to some degree.
one cannot separate the thinker from the grey matter, and the grey matter IS part of the animal....right?
are emotions all irrational, then, according to your thought? i cannot agree with that thinking, but i'd like to know what you or anyone else thinks...

as i see it:
rational fear is fearing some direct danger.
irrational fear is a fear of something which is not (necessarily) dangerous.

hospitals creep me out a lot. im not scared of them exactly, but they give me an uncomfortable feeling, even if im not around the sick people.

and i get nervous when im in any sort of building by myself and theres no background noise. its not that im alone, its more the complete silence.

im not afraid of death, but im absolutely terrified of the idea that there is nothing after it. that will be absolute proof to me that there is no real purpose to anything. i dont really see it as irrational, though.
