After 11 years, this game is perhaps the single most long running computer game of all time. While recent upgrades such as Doom Legacy which added 3D acceleration, lens flares, net play, and other features are graphically better looking, a new program has come along that I felt the need to tell you all about in case you are either an old-school gamer looking for some quick nostolgia, or a new gamer wanting to know what all the fuss is about for the upcoming Doom 3.

It's called zDaemon. (http://www.zdaemon.org/)

Essentially, this update (while not enhancing the graphics much past high resolution in most modes) gives you a large number of modern day first person shooter options, ranging from freelook to team play and most importantly up to 64 player servers. But the real kicker is not only is it totally free, but it does not require ANYTHING to play.

Once you install zDaemon, simply logging into a Doom server (usually a small number of active ones and a large number of on-line servers) will download everything you need, INCLUDING the main game's wads for both 1 & 2, or even Heretic and Hexen! Also, it will grab any mods the server is using, weather they be new levels or entire total conversions - it's everything Steam wants to be, and fails, except for classic gaming.

The best part about this game is, while I am sure most of you may have 'evolved' past the glory that is the buckets-of-gore-lightning-deathmatches that comprise the best FPS of all time, is that it is fast to get, plays quick, and is 0 hassel. You can even play it in a window - have 10 minutes to kill? You'll be deathmatching in 30 seconds. Or co-op'ing, if you prefer.

So I highly any gamers check it out, regardless of where you are at. It's small and it's free, so how can you not?

Nethack has been around since 1985. It's precursor Rogue (to which Nethack was essentially an update to) was made in 1980. Unix nerds (including my ex-roommate) still play it religiously to this day. And it is still being updated and ported to every system known to man.

Yes that's what I meant too , a new zelda game is scheduled for next year and new mario games come out every 2 years.
whatever whatever indeed.

Right, but those are different games... Super Mario brothers 3 was not an update to Super Mario Brothers 2. Certainly, the Mario franchise has been around for ages, but it's not a single game.

Unlike Doom or Nethack, where the game itself remains the same, but the updates improve existing features, add new ones, or port to new platforms.

If Mario Bros. 1 were consistently ported to different platforms, and new levels were added, with a multiplayer online feature, then yeah, it would be competition to Doom.

Half Life's getting on in years, too huh? That one will be around for a long time.

It was announced. Knowing Nintendo, it will be delayed and will be the same damn thing we already played... *cough*Sunshine, Wind Waker, 1080 Avalance*cough* Nintendo is out of it. The best games that are published by them are the games that are not developed by them (Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX, Eternal Darkness).

The Doom that was on the PSX was a remake of the first two. It had about 50 levels and re-designed where the enemies were located (now Doom II enemies were in Doom I stages). And if you were thinking of Final Doom (on the PC, and a version on PSX, but it only had 30 of the 64 levels), that was not a real legit sequel. Final Doom were two offical mod campaigns for Doom II created by id Software that were able to be played without having Doom II installed (something similar to Counter-Strike). Doom III is the offical sequel.

That's right, I'm commenting in a thread that hasn't been commented on in over three years.

Doom 64 was one of the best versions out there, if not THE best. (User content notwithstanding)

Dude you're on the wrong website. Unless you're looking for a Wad that changes all of the Imp sprites to suicide girls.

That so takes me back to the Pamela Andersen Wad.

(disclaimer: if you are under the age of 25, and never played doom...ignore this post.)
