my entire life, i've always been terrified of heights. i can never ride in glass elevators. i don't even care for standard elevators. hell, i get lightheaded standing at the top of a ladder. so needless to say, i can't stand flying

i haven't been on an airplane since 1998. since then, two things have happened. september 11th, and my developing an anxiety disorder.

and guess what! i'm flying from orlando to los angeles next friday! i just found out!

please, somebody give me some positive statistics, or share with me an anecdote regarding how my fears are totally unfounded. my stomach is tied up in knots over this frown

I hate flying too.
I wish you luck.

I know when I fly home to visit my family, the whole 17 hours I will be like holding my breath and hoping and praying and wishing.

Im sorry, and good luck.

thanks. i figure it's only 4 hours, which isn't that bad. that's like 2 movies and 100 pages of a book. plus i'll be flying with my family.

You are statistically more likely to be struck by falling plane parts while you're on the ground than you are to be in a plane crash. Don't worry.

Orlando to LA should be quite a bit more than four hours. Perhaps you're forgetting the time zone thinger?

Yeah I hate flying too. Sure it was novel at first, but then everyones all "Hey why don't you fly for us" "Yeah, come on. Just around the room or something" Ugh. I'm so sick of people.

DC to San Diego was about eight of air time with one stop. So I guess a direct flight would be about seven. Four just doesn't sound right at all.

i'm flying from PDX to NY on thursday and definitely hate flying too.

the way i look at it is i figure everyone dies sometime and if my time to die is during a plane trip then at least it beats having someone find you dead with your pants down and a porno on the television.

so, no real need to worry, a car is more likely to kill you, or maybe a bad heart and a good porno... biggrin

there's all kinds of ways to die, not just planes thousands of feet above the ground that could be filled with muslims on Jihad. You could also get hit by a taxi driven by a member of the Taliban, or you could get stabbed at safeway by a member of the Taliban too. its not just planes, though

No that's not right at all. San Diego to NYC is only about 5 hours, the stop must have moved you somewhat off the most direct route.

Flying east to west is always a bit longer because of like, the jet stream or something.

I hate flying too. Remember, take off is the worst. If you can get through that (it's like 30 secons, max) you'll be fine. Just don't look at the wing of the plane as you take off.

I have healthy fear of heights, but I love flying and I especially love turbulence.
As mentioned above, you could just get some over-the-counter sleeping pills (ie nytol) and just sleep right through it.

It depends on the plane, and the experience. Flying makes me nervous at best, horrified at worst.

When I was 16, I was on a Eastern Airlines flight from Miami to MSP. The plane had been used on East Coast shuttle all day, and stank like butt. We hit some thunderstorms and it was the worst turbulence ever. Even the flight attendants were scared, and I swore I would never fly again.

Of course, that couldn't hold. I have to travel for work, so I've learned to overcome it the best I can. I HATE widebodies. Last time I went to London, I had the usual DC-10, which, upon takeoff, is the sickest sounding plane ever. Takes forever to get down the runway, and sounds like a meat grinder while gaining altitude. But, this time, I was in a middle seat in the middle row of seats (I usually request an aisle or bulkhead). Total fucking panic attack. I can't sleep on planes, and I don't like to drink (because I figure if I'm going to meet God, I have enough to explain to top it off with being wasted at my death).

So, I hate DC-9/MD-80's (the Yugo of aerospace), DC-10's, 747's, and any regional jet/prop coffin-with-wings (ATR, SAAB, etc.). Give me a nice midsize 757 or A320 and I'm fine. The only airline I can enjoy myself & actually enjoy a toddie on is Southwest.

And, I really like United because you can hear the Air Traffic Control communications on one of their radio channels. I find that reassuring. And Northwest/KLM, while they fly those damn widebodies to Europe, at least they show a GPS shot between movies so you know where you are.

You are much more likely to die in a car crash then any sort of plane mishap. So if you are okay with driving you should rest assured the flying is much, much safer.

I have flown quite a bit for work and it has gotten to the point where I never even pay token attention to the attendants as they describe all of the plane's features and stuff like that. I am not sure if you will ever get that nonchalant about flying but other than the takeoff and the landing it is boring as shit. Bring along some music, a book, or plan on taking a nap.

Also if you are in one of the bigger planes and you happen to experience some turbulence it is much more mellow then if you were in one of those little American Eagle planes. Plus the pilots are pretty good at finding an elevation where there is little or no turbulence.

You have nothing to worry about.

i've got a love/hate thing about flying. You've gotta check in about two hours before the flight and the bars at the airport are 24 hour so i end up in drinking contests with my mates....as you do.The problem starts once i've got on the plane,i've already done the "honest im sober walk to my seat" and ive managed to put the belt on.the plane starts to move and thats the moment i want to have a piss. But i cant cos the belt signs on and the hostess wont let me move from the seat.I end up in the seat for what seems like a lifetime wishing for a bulldog clip or the the plane to crash to end my suffering. The worst part is that i do this everytime i get on a plane cos i keep forgeting about the last trip shocked
