Contradicting earlier reports and speculation that the new Batman movie would be called Batman: Intimidation Game, Cinescape has broken the news that the official title of the film will be Batman Begins.

The movie, which stars Christian Bale (Batman) and Michael Caine (Alfred), will deal with Batman's origin, as well as his fight against the evil mastermind R'as al Ghul (Ken Watanabe).

Batman Begins is now entering full production and has an expected summer 2005 release date.

Is darren aronofsky still behind this? I thought he was going to do a movie version of frank miller era batman?

i find the name a bit underwhelming - recalls to much of the "batman returns" & "batman forever" vibe for me. i liked "batman: intimidation"

oh, & this is not the aronofsky one. don't know if he's still doing one? this is christopher ("insomnia," "memento") nolan.

This will suck. I thought Christopher Nolan would do a good job. But he has decided to make Batman BRITISH. WTF?!! Katie Holmes as the love interest? Liam Neeson as the bad guy? This will crash and burn.

So I guess that means they've dropped the idea of doing Year One.

The cast is interesting.

Christian Bale - Bruce Wayne / Batman
Michael Caine - Alfred
Katie Holmes - Rachel
Liam Neeson - Henri Ducard
Morgan Freeman - Lucius Fox
Cillian Murphy - Jonathan Crane
Ken Watanabe - R'as al Ghul

and (still in talks) Dennis Quaid - Jim Gordon

I'm a little wary of the screenwriter's less than stellar resume. Chris Nolan seems to sincerely want this to be as "real" as possible, though, which may salvage the franchise from Joel Shumacher's hideous attempts (he designed costumes before directing, and it shows). The costume in this one won't be a rubber batsuit with nipples and a cowl that prevents Batman from turning his neck, it's rumored to be a similar material to the Spider-Man getup and will be gray with black accoutrements (including a solid black bat insignia). The Batmobile is supposed to be more of an SUV than a sleek rocket-car.

And, Rudy_Stains, Darren Aronofsky is no longer on the project. This is supposed to have remnants of 'Batman: Year One' remaining in the story, but from the character list, I'm sure very little of it remains intact.

[Edited to add] - For all those worried about this becoming another Shumacher mess, this movie is supposed to wipe the slate clean of all previous versions of Batman.

Well if it's Christopher Nolen, then I guess there might be a chance it could be good. Really would have liked to have seen a Year One movie.

Ken Watanabe is cool, though

at least it's not george clooney again!

he was cool in o brother where art thou.. but he was a HORRIBLE batman.

Val Kilmer was good, but Michael Keaton and Tim Burton tore that shit apart. Nothing will replace the first 2.

The actor playing Batman is Welsh tongue Katie Holmes as the love interest rubs me the wrong way and Neeson isn't the primary villain. Ken Watanabe (the only thing worth watching in The Last Samurai) is playing Ra's Al Ghul so he should be flawless in that role.

You have to admit, the talent lined up for this outing is much better than the last couple of Batman flicks.

Ghul's daughter is my favorite "Batman Chick", and I'm not convinced that Katie Holmes can do that character justice.

What?!! Dude, you should have supreme comfidence in Goyer's ability! Fucking Death Warrent, bro! And let's not forget one of the best suicide bomber lines ever from Nick Furry's made for TV outing: "We shal rock, and we shall ROLL! *SPLODE!*"

Hey, everyone, yes, the last Batman movie sucked, but guess what: THAT'S WHY THEY'RE STARTING OVER!!!! They're pretending the first four never happened. Plus, they've intentionally tried to get a good director. They were going to have Aranofsky (sp?) but Christopher Nolan is just as good and probably better for this particular project.

And no, I doubt they're making Batman brittish. IT'S CHRISTIAN BALE! HE CAN PLAY AN AMERICAN! You have only proved in saying that that you have not seen American Psycho and thus you need to see it.
