I'm very jealous. We have to wait until June 2nd before it hits our shores, and will then probably not come to my tiny town.

grumble.

Ok I was at the 1150 showing this morning(which I got into for free. Thank god for newspaper misprints) and a couple of thoughts:

The Good:
1. Mickey Rourke: Probably the only current actor who could have pulled off Marv. Althoutgh he lacked the sheer size of Marv, everything else fit.
2. Elijah Wood: Portrayed the part of Kevin so closely, it was spooky. Then again the chracter didnt have one line of dialouge in the book.
3. Nick Stahl: Juinor (That Yellow Bastard) Stahl seemed like the only person in the movie who was acting. Alot of other actors in the film seemed to be coasting on their cameos on the WB.

The Bad:
1. Michael Madsen: Good god, could MM have phoned in a more wooden performance? I mean I know he owes Quentin Tarentino a favor, but christ. You could have put a suit on a Georgia Pine and gotten the same effect.
2. The actress who played Marv's parole officer(Sorry I dont know her name, I wont matter anyway): The only way I figure it, she has a nice body. The rest of the time she might has well been reciting the script fom the CBS series Mike Hammer. Not just bad, but WOW bad.
3. Josh Hartnet: At one point I was praying that a hitman would show up and turn my head into a canoe during his blissfully short scenes. Frank Millers dialouge has to be delivered in a very deliberate way. The Keanu Reeves school aint it.

The Ugly:
1.Although Jackie-Boys life after death scenes were cool, the massive neck wound looked like a priest collar. If your gonna spend that much coin on CGI, spend the extra bucks to make the close up shots look beleivable.
2. Ok I'm gonna be a nit picker on this one: Midway through your dramatic battle scene make it a point to stay in costume (Rosario Dawson I'm looking a you) During the dramatic climax of Big Fat Kill, after spending 20 min in a sheer outfit, RD plants one on Clive Owen and you can read the brand name on her jeans. Robert, if your principal decides to go out of costume pull the shot in closer. You arent filming the movie from a wheelchair anymore.

All in all a pretty cool movie, but not all that I hoped for. A Dame to Kill For, and A big Fat Kill were almost verbatium from the source material. I cant remeber That Yellow Bastard(My copy is missing),but it seems pretty close. And between Jessica Alaba doing a cowboy pole dance, getting bullwhiped in a nightie and cowboy boots while hanging from the ceiling, the ALL of Miho's scenes I could have driven home using my penis to steer. How's that for a classy image?

Enough ranting for now, I'm drunk and tired.

I skipped class to catch the first showing in my area. I've never done that for a movie before, and I can't imagine I'll be doing it again anytime soon. (By way of comparison, I've paid $200 for cab transportation and, on another occasion, biked 10 miles across snow and ice when my car was frozen shut by an ice storm to make it to class. I don't miss lightly.)

It was so worth it. I'm just going to steal the first line of the Ain't It Cool review: "I CAMED IN MY PANTS!!!"

The movie bruised my eyeballs and sandblasted my sense of human decency and was so over-the-top ridiculously gorgeously full of its own funhouse mirror bleakness. This is the most perfect movie version of a "comic book for grownups" that I can imagine.

Best: "...like a palsy victim doing brain surgery with a pipe wrench."
Worst: Yellow Bastard's makeup. I know they were trying to stay true to the image in the books, but it could have been a little less cartoony.

Huh. I hadn't realized that Benicio Del Toro is in it - now it's an easy sell to the BDT-crazed kitschy.

YES!

His translation of the chracter was SPOT ON! His grasp of the dialogue was as precise as you could get - he knew exactly when to lay it on thick, and when to hold back, and let the lines just fall into place. And as my twin said; when you see most actors fighting onscreen, it looks like an actor play-fighting. But when Rourke hits people, it looks like he is FUCKING 'EM UP!

Everything (short of some technical things) worked so well...yay for everyone involved.

So disappointed.

frown

Even visually disappointed. I don't think the style worked at all. The dialogue was bad, things that worked as dialogue in the books just didn't translate. I couldn't pull out one good performance, even Mickey Rourke. Clive Owen was dreadful. Sorry, Rutger Hauer was good in the tiniest of bit parts. The women were all drop dead SG gorgeous but it was all really.........................lame.

God I'm so disappointed. After this it just makes me feel that no one could have made it into a good movie. It was like all the worst of Dick Tracy.

And Marv going through the little window in the cell......................WHAT!?! His ramming of the door was essential. The guys the ultimate battering ram. I'm reminded of that remake of Psycho which was shot for shot but just lacked everything that made Psycho great.

Have I mentioned how disappointed I am? I'm really really disappointed.

Batman Begins better be good.

Oh man I'm disappointed, this should have been a riot of excessive sex and violence, visually stunning. I feel so let down.

chan-wook park (old boy) should have directed it..... shocked

robert rodriguez tends to be an overall cheesy director...and it seems like it rubbed off on the movie. surreal

It was Uncanny, but if you read the books, you know exactly what is going to happen. But hey, Titties, Violence, Booze, Sex, Cigatettes, Benicio Del Toro and Art.

Oh and did anyone realize that the priest in the confessional was actually Frank Miller?!
