I have never seen SNL, they don't show it in the UK.

Have i actually missed anything ?

I would say any episode hosted by Alec Baldwin or Christopher Walken is a must-see.
Celebrity Jeopardy skits if you think you might like seeing Will Ferrell vs. a crazed Sean Connery.
There's really a lot of stuff worth watching that would appeal to different senses of humor. Just pretty much never entire episodes of the show.

I grew up watching SNL, I was of the Ferrell generation. I feel that when we hit that stage of life where Saturdays are not spend inside, we lose touch with SNL. For me it was when I turned 16 and got a car. High school drew me away from SNL. It was high school, kid's parents left town, guess what? Party time! This has continued through college, especially now that I am of age and try to go out on Saturday nights, this is of no fault to SNL, but my own gentrification (using this loosely). When I don't go out on a Saturday it is because I have to work in the morning and it comes on too late. Every season is going to have its winners and losers.

Heh I find the omission of "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" of no particular consequence. You want low standards? How about waiting for just one funny thing in half an hour, not finding anything, and still coming away thinking "That must be what cool is all about." But in my defense, I was like 13 years old. Also we grew up more slowly then, so me at 17 is like a 13 year old today. Or me at 57 for that matter.

Officially, the absolute nadir of TV comedy was "Turn On" which lasted precisely one episode. But I still think it was amusing, if not funny. I even remember a joke from it: "I dreamed I was a duck in Lester Maddox's bath tub." "What did you do?" "I MIGRATED baby."
