No foolin'. Spring is coming and that means lots of exciting birds migrating through the Chicago area. I can't wait.

Any other bird nerds out there?

I'm not one to go out on expeditions or anything, but I kinda dig watching the birds that visit the feeders at our house. It's a nice way to pass the time during meals and such.

Goldfinches, Cardinals, and Blue Jays are my favorites in the winter.

The best are the hummingbirds, though. The feeder is on the deck, and you can literally sit inches away from them. They've even bumped into me a couple times chasing each other around.

Simple pleasures, people!

Wouldn't regard myself as a full-blown fanatic - years of passive observation has just stuck in my head & can ID the common ones immediately. I do like them tho' - though I loath town pigeons/flying rats.
The feeder in the back garden has attracted a dozen-or-so regulars which are fun to watch.

Okay, so it's been a little over a year. Have any birders joined since then?

Last week I went out with my nature group and we saw two colonial great blue heron rookeries. Amazing! The sound of wings flapping, dozens of them. I'm a casual birder right now, but could see myself getting into it as I get older. Thanks for posting this! smile smile

Yeah.

Bird-watching.

THAT is what I was doing in your backyard bushes with the binoculars.

I swear it.

A bird has built a nest in the black pine tree right outside my window.
Sorry Rickets I can't tell what kind of bird it is; but I started that tree from seed, and now a bird has built its nest in it, and I'm so proud

You know, I never gave this honest consideration before, but it being brought up in this thread has made me think it might be cool. Hmm. Does that mean I'm getting old? tongue No seriously, I think I might look into it. It seems peaceful, calming.

Although it might lead to my downfall. One day I could be ducking in a trench and see a bird and start to draw it. I'll undoubtedly forget where I am in this attempt to revel in a little bit of beauty and normalcy, stand up and get get shot in the head. Conundrum.

I like birdies. I have two feeders. One is right ouside my cat's window as to drive him crazy, and the other is in front of the kitchen windows so I can watch them while I pretend to do dishes. We have a lot of girls around here, finches, etc. But my favorites are hummingbirds and redbirds. So pretty.

Fortunately for you, birds rarely sit still long enough for you to draw.
