The UPN network is in hot water for pitching a new reality show depicting Amish teens living it up in the big city. According to Pennsylvania lawmaker Joe Pitts :

"The mentality reminds me of the old sideshows in the circus," Rep. Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania said during a news conference Friday. "And it is wrong to do this to a minority group like the Amish."

UPN denies any allegations that they are exploiting this group and, at this time, the show is still in development.

Anyone see the documentary "the devils playground"? It's practically an Amish real world. It's about when Amish kids tunr 18 or something (not sure about the specific age), they are allowed to leave the church temporarily to experience the outside world, then make their decision to dedicate their lives to the church....or not. Basically TONS of Amish kids have HUGE parties just about every night, getting drunk and high and all that. These parties are so "good" that many non Amish kids envy them. It's actually a very interesting documentary, i recomend everyone check it out.

I've seen this, and it is worth seeing. I believe that age of "rumspringa" -- I'm not sure of the spelling -- is 16.

Most of the film focused on an Amish preacher's son, Faran. He becomes addicted to crystal meth, and ends up dealing to support his habit. It's pretty intense stuff.

Worth trying to track down if you have a good video store in town.

I live in the boonies. There are a lot of Mennonites here. (They don't use any electricity, interal combustion engines, or other modern conveiences).

Feild parties were always made even more hilarious when the Mennonite kids would show up and we'd get them wasted.

Ahhh, the days of mispent youth....
