Great interview. I bought the album the day it came out, excellent stuff. VAST is one of those bands that aren't well known, but put out the most amazing music. Gad a lot of people know who they are here, yaay!

"You can't tell me what to do anymore..."

"Free" and "Touched" are my two favorite VAST songs, quite possibly because they were both included in a promotional cd someone gave me at a concert years ago. It was the first I ever heard of them, and to this day the best.

Of course, I haven't heard the new record yet...

Good interview. I purchased Visual Audio Sensory Theater after reading your comments about VAST in your journal.

I think the fate of the major label music industry has been doomed from its first step. Selling art as a buy-able commodity instantly degrades its value, no matter what meaning it intrinsically has to the artist. At some point an artist which is on a major label trades their ends of expression for a paycheck. This is an unfortunate side effect of mass media production, but the music industry has escalated it to this point. If the artist doesn’t make an album sale then they are dropped from the label. We’ve seen this a billion times with “one hit wonders”; although it is questionable if some of those people really were artist in the first place or just puppet performers dancing for money.

Now artists are able to take back what was theirs and effectively have creative control while still being able to share it with the rest of the world. This loop hole sitting in front of our faces has allowed a network of art independence with out the blessings of the conglomerate music industry. The Internet and File sharing is a big “FUCK YOU!!” to Sony, BMG, Universal, etc…. Fairly newer Labels like No Idea, Robotic Empire, Level Plane, Relapse, Saddle Creek, etc, etc; would not have been able to promote and distribute with out this medium of information. And I have noticed the latter takes time to instill quality in the product instead of worrying about the quantity of album sales as the former dose.

Vast, I think, is being fairly audacious with its sales approach and I wish them the best of luck…

great interview.... and nice art work on the album cover too..
