Hey, UK member here - just to ask, why is Skins making such a ruckus stateside? From what I've seen, it's no worse than the UK version, and that didn't really cause any problems. Are the UK's cultural mores really that different? Because I know that America is more uptight about sex, but to call it child pornography seems a bit...much.
The religious right is taking over the U.S. Sex and lust is a sin. Unless, of course, you're a priest fucking young boys or a preacher doing meth with male prostitutes. Then you just beg forgiveness from your flock, or the Archdiocese silently moves you to another parish.
When I first heard they were doing an American version I thought to myself, there is no way in hell they can get away with half of that on basic cable.
Luckily, they don't really have much to worry about because it took me three attempts to get through one episode. Apparently, crap acting is much more tolerable with an English accent.
From what I've heard, the US version of Skins, episode one was basically the exact same storyline as the UK version. It hadn't been adapted for a US audience at all.
I also heard that a lot of language was bleeped out.
Calling it child pornography was just an attempt to get a bunch of right-wingers up in arms about the show. Which can only increase the ratings for MTV, though they have lost several advertisers. I've seen an episode and a half, and haven't seen anything sexual beyond making out and just talking about sex, so I don't get the fuss either.
It's not a good show, but it's MTV, so that's par for the course.

Problems:
1) It was filmed in Canada....and we all know nothing good comes from Canada.
2) It's on MTV.
3) It's the United States and as United States citizens we repeatedly deny that our younger generations engage in sexual acts/drug related acts/alcohol related actions.
4) The PTC doesn't approve of it. With such key members as Billy Ray Cyrus, conservative parents like him do not approve of such sexual situations/alcohol related situations and teens.

Harsh reality.
It seems so typical of MTV these days filling their slots with garbage tv that gets too much media attention because of the hissy fits people are throwing...although I do find myself irked by some of the bullshit they air
I love the show, and I think that all kids should watch it. From the episodes I've seen so far it seems to do an awesome job of showing how seemingly fun things can pretty much destroy your life if you go over the top with them.
The impression I got from various reports was that the US version was quite tame compared to the UK version, and looking online seeing some of the quotes from the show I can only assume the script writers had no idea of people actually talk. I mean "Later we'll get bumping at the party with a pile of drugs … and Stanley, I only like great narcotics, understand?", who the hell refers to drugs as narcotics other than the police (or at least the police in shows we get in the UK!
Of course doing a straight conversion with the original script isn't going to work without adjustment, since apart from anything else there are just so many subtle differences between UK and US teen drinking and drug culture.
pretty much sums up the two sides of the argument. there's the real world twit (I'M A POLITICIAN'S WIFE!!!!!) reminding us she was on mtv once, and anderson cooper blathering on about the jersey shore, while the new love of my life, isha sesay calmly debates and posits the earth-shattering idea that maybe parents, and not the media, should be taking responsibilty for their teens' sexuality.
I thought the first two seasons of the UK skins were brilliant, and very different to the newer series of UK skins and the US skins, i think they took the first two seasons and then just kept adding more things on top, i dont think it is that bad, if you don't like it don't watch it.
And in Australia we don't get either anymore i don't think

AMEN!
I liked the first two series of Skins UK, so I gave a try to Skins US, but OMG, they're crappy actors!
I don't really like the casting choices they made either.
