So, these dudes in NY are placing portable USB drives in random walls so you can roll up and plug in your computer and download whatever you find or upload whatever you want for the next person to grab - all offline!

Someday, we'll ba able to embed vimeo on this site!

That's pretty cool. USB flash drives are amazing little things, and this is yet another way to utilize them.

I wonder what types of files most people are putting on these. Porn? Music? Favorite recipes? Probably anything and everything.

How long do you think it'll take before there's nothing on these but CP and virus-laden files?

I mean, it's a neat idea and all, but I just don't trust people not to do shit like that.

I can see viruses becoming widespread. But kiddie porn? Since anybody who comes up can wipe it, and the vast majority of the population is revolted by it, and it's obvious as you look over the files, expect that to get wiped before anyone who wants it is likely to find it. Maybe certain specific sticks could become known as exchange points for such, but for most, I don't see it happening.

I'm also curious about how they'll stand up to the elements.

I'd also be worried about getting mugged after using one. Or during.

Must be nice, being an optimist and all. Sorry, I just think the potential for abuse (high) coupled with the anonymity factor (also high) will result in this winding up as a real-life 4chan.

Yes, the elements.

And thieves. I Geocache and caches get stolen all the time. And they are pretty useless.

This is a really interesting idea though.

I've washed mine several times.

Every time i washed it i would think to myself "Man i need to back up the files on this thing so i know they're safe". I would plug it in, it would open fine, i could open things on it and for some reason i never backed it up.

After the last time i washed it because i am a moran, i went to pull the cap off of it and ended up pulling the entire USB connection out of it. Needless to say i never backed it up.
