So, my friend and I want to get away at some point in February. We're from the NYC area, and after a few years of trips to VT...it;s time for a change. A warmer climate is definitely in need. We're both into the bar hopping scene, but we're also up for some sight seeing during the day. I'm thinking New Orleans, since we've never been there...but I'm looking for some other suggestions. Not looking to go overseas or anything, but we're willing to travel pretty far within the US. Aside from the major draws (New Orleans, Vegas, Miami) anyone have some suggestions that might not be on the radar?
The mountains in North Carolina are beautiful, though travel there may be difficult right now. New Orleans is a really neat city. The Florida Keys are pretty cool too.
If you're looking for warmer without leaving the US, I'd say Vegas or Florida. Or Hawaii. Vegas is probably the cheapest, and there's a ton to do there.
Aww, now I feel bad. I don't really spend monies when I go to Florida...just on booze...and maybe at this tattoo shop we go to...and on strippers....I guess I do contribute
Oh no doubt, most of my money would be spent on strippers too. Did someone really suggest Montreal? Unless they moved Montreal a few thousand miles south, I think I'll pass. I've been to FL a bunch of times, but mostly the theme park areas. I was tossing around the Florida Keys as an idea also. How's the scene there?
Vegas is good for about 3 days. But it is a fun 3 days. Don't stay on the strip, or at least the heart of the strip. The hotels are really expensive. The Stratosphere and the other hotels down at that end are reasonable during the week - I've stayed in the Strat for like $60/night. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a fancy room either. You're going to be in it to sleep, shower, and if you're lucky, fuck.
ETA: Personally I'd love to go to New Orleans. I've never been, and its something that's on my to-do list in 2011.
The French Quarter wasn't affected as much by the flooding, I hear. Iwouldn't mind going back. Too bad my car's shit...
Yeah. She is right though. Its amazing how much that city has come back from, especially looking at the fact that there's no exaggeration there. How a city manages to come back the way NO did after all but being obliterated is something you never think would happen, even if they still do have years of rebuilding left to do.
Yeah, I was hoping that comment about NO was a joke...but I'm not so sure. I would hope someone living in the US would know that there is still a city left. Anyway, I think I am leaning towards NO. I think I need to get there before I get too old. Who knows when I'll get the chance to do it again. Has anyone been there that can offer up some travel tips?
Tempe, Phoenix, Scottsdale area. Warm in the day this time of year, good weather for outdoor activities. Your choice of the college scene down in Tempe to upscale in Scottsdale. Lots of places to go from Flagstaff/Sedona in the north down to Tuscon south. Area gets a rep. for the older folks/snowbirds this time of year but you can find fun things to do or just sit around a resort/spa and be pampered.
NO is ok but when you are there you are there, not much going on in the surrounding area. Weather can be tricky this time of year. Jan-mid March is rainy season on the gulf coast. If the temp changes up or down a few degrees it is going to rain because of all the humidity. And it can get cold in NO too, we have had 30s-40s over here in Houston this week.

Good luck.

Yeah, I would love to go check out the AZ sites too. I think my friend is moving out there in a few months, so I'm going to wait until he is out there so I can just crash with him. I was also thinking about Austin TX too. How is it there?
