Nah, real nerds, freaks and geeks are still outcastes. It just now the chic thing for the cool and normal kids to call themselves these days because of the way "nerd culture" has been packaged and sold to the masses.
I think it is the time of the nerd geeks and freaks: all your classic superheros have a movie coming out, great games are getting attention from everyone and were sitting online talking about the huge population of girl gamers.
I think you are still confusing real nerds/geeks/outcastes with regular and popular people who have just started to consume "nerd/geek culture". I bet if you went into any highschool real nerds and geeks are still at the lowest rung of society regardless if the popular kids have embraced "nerd/geek culture" or not. Hell even past highschool and onto college and beyond I am pretty sure it is the same way. There are real nerds, freaks and geeks and then there are the consumers of nerd/geek culture. They are not the same thing.
I think Sallen is right, there is a difference between who really know comics / games / Star Trek / whatever, and those who wear the shirts and buy the merchandise to be ironic.
I think the chicks posting here, and those Bob is talking about are the real deal. We aren't just mashing buttons - we have strategies and specialties in all the games we play. What? It's like we actually know how to play!
