"I do try like hell to not be ashamed. But, sometimes I am, I have to admit," says New Jersey-born comedienne, actress and activist, Janeane Garofalo. We've been talking for close to 45 minutes - mostly about TV, politics, the media, and the toxicity of contemporary pop culture. As I switch the tape recorder off and the conversation winds down, we briefly discuss what Garofalo herself turns to in order to unwind, which is the source of her current state of angst.
That was a wonderful read. I have always been a fan of Janeane Garofalo, both in acting and in general in her attitudes and opinions. I love the fact that she can express herself so intelligently with higher-level speech compared to the average uneducated American, but then she mixes that with straight-shooting to-the-point phrases like "the whole thing's fucked." Truly a beatiful woman, in all aspects of the word
Not for me.
The word "racist" is a serious and hateful accusation. No one likes to be unfairly judged and deemed a racist... just like no one likes to be unfairly and hurtfully judged based on race. If you throw around the term so nonchalantly, then you clearly don't understand how terrible racism is.
I realize most people flaming the Tea Parties are at the same time ignoring it, so allow me to state that plenty of black people support the Tea Party movement as well.
But I guess they're self-loathing, right? Because if any black person goes is outside the Democrat mold, they clearly must be stupid or incapable of thinking for themselves.
Uh yeah.. and they're the racist ones.

Hmmm, That's what I was gonna say! Only you said it a lot nicer. Ms. Garofalo is a sputtering spigot of the same few and narrow minded talking points that all the "Hollywood Left" crowd spew. Muttering flash words like "racist" and "rich" is a lot easier than listening to people and thinking about their views.
Her stand-up was never really that funny any damn way.

You are probably completely earnest in saying this, so I'm not picking on you. Instead, I'm using your comment as a springboard.
IMO, part of what is wrong with American politics is a way of thinking that says people are either all-good or all-bad. (Of course, there's nothing special about Americans here. This is a less-pleasant part of human nature.) I would love to see people who love her comedy but disagree with her, or even better, agree with some of her arguments but disagree with others.
Almost no-one on this planet is all evil, and no-one on this planet is all good. If someone is wrong or wrong-minded in one area, it doesn't invalidate where they are correct in others. Or, someone can be a great artist or performer but just wrong politically. That doesn't invalidate their artistry.
I have always loved Janeane Garofalo, but in this interview where she talks about the "Tea Baggers" (what an ignorant term to use) I strongly disagree with her. Yes, there are racists among that group, but there are also plenty of Democrats who use race as a weapon in an illigitimate manner as well. Casting all Tea Party members as racist or deluded is ignorant and just contributes to political noise.
Well, she was preaching to the choir up in here, so I thoroughly enjoyed reading the interview. Of course, the argument she made later on may also apply here: if you don't like what you're reading, don't read it.
As usual, your interview was a pleasure to read. I love the way you interact with JG and how you get each other so wound up. I wish I could have witnessed this
I love JG's honesty and her constant efforts to think for herself and to be herself in a business where it's not encouraged. She is effing brilliant!
My word. Good interview, not knocking the interviewer, but I can't stand Garafalo. Anyone she doesn't like has to be racist. She overuses that word, and she's freaking white!
I'd love to swap skins next time I get harassed by a pig and then she can see what it's like to be a victim of racism. Then maybe she won't overuse the word so much and reserve it for someone who really deserves it.
still liked the interview.....even though to tea party may not be entirely "racist" i judge the half as a whole. Which is why i am in independent myself....i just hope those who commented do enough for themselves by researching the actually reason for the tea party' conception and furthermore seeing if they are staying steadfast in that goal...or just spouting GOP hyperbole
very good interview. she's basicaly saying something i've thought of for a long time, society is shooting itself in the foot. I look at how things were when i was younger and compare them to how we live today. i've ignored trends and whatnot myself because i see nothing but shallowness in people that live through them.
i've thought just about every fraction of our government is in need of a huge overhaul for a very long time. the state of the world has evolved and laws and practices have not kept up. Maybe society is moving to fast for it to keep up.
