Amped up on Four Loko? Try it's doppleganger Drank

With the energy drink craze that has taken over gas stations across the country the past ten years, the world has seen its share of energy drinks. Now a new drink has appeared on the market that is calling itself the "anti-energy drink." Drank, as it is named, is produced by the Houston-based Innovative Beverage Group, and bears the slogan "slow your roll" as its motto.
The difference between the anti-energy drink Drank and the more common energy drinks is that Drank is designed not to give you a boost of energy, but instead to calm and relax you. According to the official website for the beverage, the anti-energy drink Drank includes three ingredients to give this "slow your roll" effect: melatonin, valerian root, and rose hips. Of these three, two are worth noting.

Melatonin? Really? In pill form, one little dose and I am knocked on my ass for like 12 hours, and even then I have trouble waking up. I tried it once because I was having trouble getting into a normal sleeping pattern after a string of midnight shifts. I don't think I would ever take it with/as an alcoholic product. That's just begging for date-rape.

The few times I tried melatonin I slept like a rock and woke up in cold sweat after some seriously intense dreams.

I started riding the alcoholic energy drink train in 08. I was living in SW Georgia at the time. My friends informed me about MD 20/20; I never heard of it so I took a short 2 minute drive to the gas station near my apartment complex. There was no MD but staring back at me in the beer fridge were 3 different, brightly colored cans with the word "JOOSE" scribbled on it in the style of graffiti. Caffeine, ginseng, taurine, and malt liquor weighing in at 9.9% ABV; it couldn't be any worse than it sounded. I chose blue, leaving red and orange for another date.

I jacked back into Dalaran and cracked the can. It took me about 30 minutes to finish the can. To this day I hate beer and malt liquor so the taste was offensive,-but the rapidly increasing buzz was fucking amazing. Over time I acquired the taste of malt liquor and drank 2-3 a week, especially when purple found its way to the shelves.

There's been a few times too many where I drank 2 or 3 in one night. I don't recall the nights ever ending well, I either passed out (despite the caffeine and other shit) or became belligerent. Four Loko replaced Joose until Joose stepped its game up to 12%, then it became a battle of which flavor I wanted.

I kicked the habit of regularly consuming these. These types of drinks are now sold in NY without energy boosts but still pack a good punch. The cheap buzz isn't worth the punishment your body takes between calories and carbs.

If anyone is still the least bit curious, there's a plethora of flavors now available between the two big contenders (Joose, Four Loko). There's a host of other brands out there hopping aboard the flavored malt liquor train (Tilt, Blast, etc).

Valerian root can have a similar effect. It's usually taken as an herbal anti-anxiety treatment. I won't be trying this drink any time soon.

I can't find anything on "Drank" that isn't at least 2 years old.
