My ex-step-dad is a cop.
I try not lump cops in a group. It's like lumping together lawyers, teachers, republicans, etc.

When they don't take advantage of their power, they're great.
They keep my neighborhood safe.

They're just people. Some are awesome some are asshats.

There you go.

I have been done wrong by them personally. But decided to look at the individual and his actions, not the whole group. Which is really hard at times.

Thankfully, I worked closely with them at my last job. Easier to see them as the "good guys".

I can't watch the tv show COPS any more. You see them screw people over on that show. Without the camera there they could probably use their judgment. But with everyone watching, they probably have to be a hard ass.

I wish I would meet people who think like you about cops. Just because one asshole screws up doesn't make us all bad.

I hate reading the newspaper or watching the news here, they are so anti-cop. I understand that people in the dept have messed up but damn, I work hard everyday and try to be the best I can.

Don't lump me into the fuck up group too! Lol

My father was a deputy Sheriff in Los Angeles and eventually rose to detective. He put in 30 years and when he ruined his back in service, the county tried to screw him over. Way to go County.

I am not saying all police are great as there are some who do go over the line, etc... but the world would be a much more dangerous place if it were not for them.

Exactly. It's not fair to generalize about anyone.

At the very least, COPS is awesome because it was the inspiration for the greatest Mr. Show character ever... Ronnie Dobbs

I think cops have one of the toughest jobs in the market. They have to deal with the worst parts of our society and try and maintain some perspective. They are expected to be super human and a single mistake can cost them personally, professionally and get plastered all over the news. At least they get paid more than teachers (which doesn't say much).

In some states we aren't paid more than teachers. I can tell you in Philly we do, but our firefighters and EMS guys get paid WAYYYY more then we do, and its only because they are so short handed in the city.

We only have 6,000 cops in the city of Philadelphia, and 300 medic units. Now split those into 9 shifts and groups and take away supervisors and detectives and you're left with nearly nothing. It sucks.

Its rare that I meet a person and they truly appreciate what I do for a living. Its a very hard job, but I'm not complaining. I knew getting into this that it would be hard and I'd get paid nearly nothing, but you know what, I think about all the idiots I arrest and how many more are out there, and it pisses me off, but once in a while I'll meet someone who REALLY needs my help. And when I get a chance to help someone whose at wits end, it makes me feel whole again.

It can be frustrating and fulfilling all in the same shift.
