Big Fish sucked and I'm glad that the Academy and the viewing public acknowledged it by not showing support

haha anders, i guess you just had to be there tongue

and the cruiser is actually a very good actor, he seems to be shying away from the blockbusters - i mean any film with him in turns into one but - he wants to be an ator, and with just a little more guidance in the films he choses i think he could have a long career after his looks fade as a fine dramatic actor. eyes wide shut, magnolia, vanilla sky, and the last samurai, all made with noble intentions, even if they didn't quite work, go back to the beginning of his areer and look at stuff like the outsiders. the man can act, it's just the fact he's a superstar at the moment that is getting in the way. personally i think he might be in need of a string of dismal failures so he can make his comeback movie and be respected - a la travolta - as long as he doesn't let the newfound glory go to his head and make a battlefield earth he'd do fine.

word. there's also some performances that were never nominated that just kill me...

Dustin Hoffman for "Little Big Man" (one of the most brilliant roles ever)
Luke Wilson for "the Royal Tennenbaums"
Kevin Kline for "Life as a House" (and that's even one of those "I am an oscar movie" movies)
geoffrey rush for "quills"

I could go on...

Rain Man beating Dangerous Liaisons in 88puke

i have to disagree. while there was certainly the old, ooh he's playing a retard, vote, as someone that lived with an autistic brother for 23 years i can tell you that film is fucking fantastic. hoffman is perfect, really perfect, and the relationshi[ between him and cruise is amazing. no doubt dangerous liasons is good, but rain man is wonderful.

His performance was flawless, I simply think Liasons is a superior film. However, I think you're biased towards autistic filmswink

surprisingly not, in fact if anything it's the other way. i've seen many over the years, and they are never anything like real, that's why rain man is so great, it really does capture perfectly both what autistic people are like (albeit being a savant, which is incredubly rare) but also the incredible difficulty of living with an autistic person. if i am biased, it's that i can recognise through experience the greatness in that film most people are unaware of because they haven't experienced it. i see it more as being able to truly understand what the film is about rather than simply being biased.
i guess there are 2 ways of looking at it. either the film is a failure on some level, because it can only communicate its message properly to people that have already exerienced something similar, or it is a triumph because for people that really understand the film, nothing could convey the emotions involved better.
i like to think it is the latter, as to me it's one of the most emotionally involving movies i've ever seen, that certainly is biased, hoofman and cruise's relationship is too similar to my own situation to pretend otherwise, but that doesn't stop it from being an amazing piece of cinema, beautifuly acted and directed, which carries an emotional weight that i don't think dangerous liasons does - to anyone.

Rain Man shouldn't have won because of this

I gotta say Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction in '94

and the mother of all Oscar travesties:

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Judy Davis -- Husbands and Wives {"Sally"}
Joan Plowright -- Enchanted April {"Mrs. Fisher"}
Vanessa Redgrave -- Howards End {"Ruth Wilcox"}
Miranda Richardson -- Damage {"Ingrid"}
* Marisa Tomei -- My Cousin Vinny {"Mona Lisa Vito"}

I thought the biggest Oscar snub of all time was when Al Pachino in The Godfather (II ?) and Jack Nicholson in Chinatown lost to Art Carney in Harry and Tonto. I mean, traditionally, I thought that was considered the biggest upset.

Definitely Forrest Gump beating Pulp Fiction.

Although LOTR not getting anything but technical awards bugs the living shit out of me.
Sean Astin so deserved to get nominated this year frown

i concur with whomever mentioned kubrick not getting more props. all those fine movies and he won one fucking oscar for special effects in 2001. theres something wrong there.

and not only was pulp fiction better than forrest gump in 94 but so was the shawshank redemption.
