The Dreamers is truly a film for cinephiles. Any film where an American, a twin brother and sister watch films at one of the best arthouses in the world and then go back to their apartment for sex is truly every film geeks dream. But though The Dreamers may sound seamy it is certainly one of the most beautiful and touching films you will see this year. This is no small part due to its auteur director, Bernardo Bertolucci. Bertolucci has likened films to way Akira Kurosawa did, as dreams. That is...

great interview. ill edit this when i can conjour up something more constructive.
BERTOLUCCI, bertolucci...the best thing that ever came out of a Bertolucci film was the soundtrack Gato Barbieri composed for the highly overrated ostentatious piece of shit "The Last Tango In Paris." Come on already, he has something great with "The Last Emperor" but even that film can induce stinging fits of boredom at times - again, the soundtrack by David Byrne and Ryuichi Sakamoto carries the film, which is too long, like all of Bertollucci's films. And that won best picture I believe, but my memory of 1987 escapes me.
Bottom line, when I saw Stealing Beauty with Liv Tyler I began to question the merits and praises of this celebrated director. I wonder if he was American what critics would have to say. They wouldn't be so nice I suspect. Bertolucci has thrived on controversy for the sake of controversy and I am sure his latest offering, "The Dreamers," is no different. Is the NC-17 warranted to push the story? Really warranted? Ultimately, I imagine that "The Dreamers" is the type of film that will get all the press because it shows tits, ass, cock, and puss - but how does it help the film. How did Brando, in "Last Tango" fucking Maria Schienider is the ass with a butter lubricant improve that slow as a slug depressing "barely" a story film? It didn't. A clear case of controversy for the sake of controversy.
If you want to see a foreign filmmaker making some leaps in cinema and whose films are all unrated because the violence and sex in his films add to the story -they shock and repulse the viewer in ways some might have never been moved - I put my money on Gasper Noe. Bernardo, take a nap, watch your work.
Didn't read the whole interview just the final Brando comments. I don't really keep up with the medium of cinema anymore (computer guy) but I do remember loving the hotel in Last Tango, Brando, that old prostitute, the girl , wedding, final incredible tango scene - roaring screaming subway. Last Tango in Paris. maybe it was. time will tell.
