How about, instead of worrying about fitting in this category or that category, you just try to be happy with who you are and what you like. You like wearing a skirt that looks like it was made from a disney umbrella, combat boots and a bikini top? Go for it. If you like wearing plain old jeans and a t-shirt? Go for it. You like running around naked? Go for it (when it won't get you arrested).
Being "alt" means, as far as I can tell, just being your own person and saying "To Hell!" with what other people think.
To me, an "alt girl" is one who instead of becoming a consumer of traditional/current fashion and beauty styles (makeup, wardrobe, etc) - rather embraces one or more cliche elements of the alternative community.
Neither style really has much originality. They are both like a Mr./Mrs. Potato Head where you assemble a "new look" based off of existing pieces.
