Ocean Gate man breaks Guinness record, holds 17 eggs in palm

OCEAN GATE _ It was so quiet in borough hall Wednesday, the small crowd gathered there could hear an egg drop.

And quite a few eggs did fall _ and splatter _ before borough resident Rob Beaton succeeded in breaking the Guinness world record for the most raw eggs held in the upturned palm of one hand.

The record, 12 eggs, was achieved Oct. 4 by Damien Fletcher in London, according to Guinness World Records Ltd.

Beaton, a computer technician employed by the Toms River school district, said he has wanted to set a world record since he was a little boy, when his father bought him a "Guinness World Records," and in September the 28-year-old decided to go for the egg-holding record.

"It sounded easy, and it could be done with stuff in my kitchen," he said.

So on Wednesday, after months of vigorous and sometimes messy training, Beaton gathered with his time keeper, his photographer, two witnesses and a newspaper reporter _ all required as per Guinness guidelines.

He stood on a plastic drop cloth, with a tray of eggs and a towel in front of him, and attempted to erase Fletcher's name from the record list. Guinness rules gave him 30 seconds to position the eggs in one hand and required him to hold the eggs for 10 seconds.

"The heat is on," he said after his first try ended with a mess on the floor. "This is harder with people watching."

His strategy, he said, is to lay out each medium hen's egg in a specific direction on his palm, based on the shape of the egg.

After three failed attempts, his strategy worked. Beaton held 16 eggs in his right hand, and then broke his own record by holding 17. His audience applauded.

"I'm pretty glad to have finally done it," he said, adding that the process of claiming a record is harder than actually breaking the record.

If Guinness recognizes Beaton's record-breaking attempt, it will award him a certificate, include details of his achievement in its database of records and possibly feature him in a future publication.
