At the time much of the footage for the Oscar-nominated documentary Burma VJ was being shot, its director, Anders Østergaard, wasn’t even in the same hemisphere. Wanting to open a window on the closed country of Burma (a.k.a. Myanmar), the Danish-based filmmaker struck up a groundbreaking remote collaboration with a network of underground citizen reporters, who risked torture, imprisonment and death as they shot then smuggled footage beyond the military dictatorship’s closely guarded borders.
Important film, important interwiew. The whole thing is pretty big here
in Denmark. So " Poj Poj " to Anders and Thank you to Nicole Powers -
and to Missy, for making it all happen ;-D Love Reneeg Copenhagen.
P.S. " Poj Poj " is used in Denmark as " Breake a Leg " is used in the
English Speaking Countries - as good luck wishes for actors and theater
people....
Great interview, sounds like a fascinating film. I really wasn't aware of the situation in Burma either and I suspect many people aren't. I'm going to have to make sure I see this film. Nice job.
This is an amzing film... My co-worker is from Burna and he told me about the film about two weeks ago... It is really tragic how many poeple have to live in such areas where fear acompanies the population... I rate this one a 10 and highly recomend it... Made me feel the need to want to do something to help these people.... Sad but what can we do.... Many peole die for freedom and many will continue dying.... As long as we have corrupt governments as well as Dictators.... Many people will live under oppresion and torment....
Not to draw a comparison, but this further humbles my understanding of that part of the world than when I watched the 'behind the scenes' for the latest Rambo film that covered the same conflict. One of my friends from highschool calls this place home and I had no idea that it was so crumbled. And then we all saw the news of the Monks. That brought on memories of tiananmen square. While I have lived in places of turmoil before, you forget that just because you live in peace, that doesn't mean that things like this do not exist and require the attention of all or it will continue.
