Growing up in the shadow of Disneyland, artist and illustrator Camille Rose Garcia spent a lot of time contemplating the reality of fantasy and the fantasies that make reality palatable.
Just as the white paint flaked and the wood decayed in the once-perfect picket-fenced suburbs that surround Disney's Orange County Fantasyland, on canvas and in print, Garcia's brightly colored fairytale tableaus are juxtaposed with darker elements, as real world forces impinge on her perfect dream worlds.
This is a really deep interview, not just for its insights into Garcia's work, but also for its insight into the American character. Garcia is right in noting that to a large extent we live in a national fairy tale, and that this national fairy tale has had disastrous results for us an our children.
One only wishes we had more interviews like this in the mainstream media.
So odd I just blogged today about the movie Malice in Wonderland...and I am so excited to see the new Tim Burton rendition of the fairy tale.. this story has always fascinated me ..I had the opportunity to see a play in my hometown of Alice in Wonderland one time that only consisted of the set of a box that the characters popped out of or into I thank you for bringing Camille Rose Garcia .. her artwork and this insightful..needless to say honest interview..Kudos on getting to the heart of the matter !!
