for the life of me, i cant see why letterman appeals to anyone. leno i get. although not so much for me anymore, but i get his appeal. letterman just annoys the shit out of me
I really enjoy Letterman because he has a dark and angry streak. Sort-of a cranky old man thing. And after his heart surgery, Dave pretty much said "Anything goes now."I really grew to like him during that stretch of time between Conan leaving "Late Night" and getting "The Tonight Show"
Dave's real strength is he's easily the best interviewer of any late night host, and seems to have more non-celebrity guests than anyone else. Dave also has had some great moments on his show that have also been serious (i.e. his show after 9/11 with Dan Rather, and his admittance of his extra-marital affairs). he's not afraid to speak his mind, and it seems CBS lets him.
Besides, he has "Lyle the Intern" and "Alan Kalter's Celebrity Interviews" and leads into Craig Ferguson.

Watch his interview of Paris Hilton. It's fucking hilarious. Also, some of his old-school stuff was just way off the wall. While sometimes he seems like an angry cat crawled up his ass and died (that's the angry streak Cassiel is talking about), I think he's far funnier than Leno, and certainly a rival to Conan, if not better.
That HAD to be hard for Conan, respect the hell out of him for doing it, somewhat surprised he took the graceful bow out, part of me wishes he coulda turned on more rock star for a more 'fuck you' exit, show some anger that you know is there. More the energy he displayed during the writers strike.
I did like the closing Will Ferrel performance, complete with cowbell, still a tad odd, Beck next to Billy Gibbons............
Overall the show was somber as hell I thought, everybody just kinda speechless, but trying to say something........
Theres something about this happening to Conan I find scary, the way American society is right now, so creatively narow-minded, reserved, same-ole traditional, too afraid to try anything new.......Conans never been afraid to blaze new trails...........now here comes Leno with his stale family-friendly 1-liners.............
Still, I believe Conan is the Phoenix, I look forward to his comeback............
i would liked to have seen triumph show up sometime during this week, but other than that, i think he did a good job with the time he had to end things.
and the fact that he stuck up for his entire staff, down to the janitors, not to mention that he brought so much of his staff with him from new york, has earned so much respect from me.
