Seriously. i think its great taht Anderson tries to make film that are smart AND art, but do they have to be so boring? The one with Paltrow and the gambler? I kept waiting for it to come together then it just ends. "Oh the same thing is happening to me that happened to my father." And in Magnolia: OK. Drop the other shoe!! but it never drops...I think he did a movie before magnolia that was good? what else did he do?

I love magnolia – but I'm always meeting people who tell me that they don't get it.

A post-Altman post:

In commemoration of the passing of an American hero who undoubtedly inspired my favorite film, I'd suggest that anyone who was moved by magnolia see its Altman ancestors, Short Cuts and Nashville.

Short Cuts: This movie is Altman's tribute to Raymond Carver, a scathing, poignant short story writer who died too young. The intersecting So Cal stories bracketed by medfly hysteria and an earthquake do resonate throughout magnolia, but I fear too many people take a "short cut" to the conclusion that magnolia is an Altman rip-off. If you read the Raymond Carver source material before you watch the movie, you'll be better able to appreciate the narrative tricks pulled by Altman. Also note, Julianne Moore is in both magnolia and Short Cuts. Chris Penn is in Short Cuts, only, but there is a family connection to magnolia: Eileen Ryan (Penn's mother) plays game show host Jimmy Gator's assistant, while Michael (Penn's brother) assists with music for the film.

Nashville: Altman called this film a bicentennial "birthday present to America," and, perhaps, now, it will be revered as a cherished gift by a nation that has so brazenly lost its compass. Both Henry Gibson and Michael Murphy star in both magnolia and Nashville. Watch it with a patient, open mind.

Yeah, I pretty much love that movie. But I loved it more when it was called "Short Cuts."
