For Art Direction, Lynch's "Dune" is excellent. It reminds me of a Victorian HG Wells type of look. The first half of the film is very good in my book. I lose it in the second half, though, the battles & terrible effects are not good at all. There is no good climactic ending.
Of all the films David Lynch directed he does state that "Dune" is his worst and he himself hates it. It was his first studio film and he did not get final cut. Because of this experience he will not do another studio film unless he gets final cut.
George Lucas recently asked Lynch to direct "Star Wars 3". Lynch of course said "No".

well, all i can say is that it's too bad jordorowsky didn't get a chance to direct it. he was the first director to be picked for the movie, and was all set to direct it with a cast and crew including orson welles, gloria swanson, dan o'bannon (screenwriter, "alien") moebius (with whom jordorowsky occasionally collaborates with for his graphic novels) h.r. giger, salvador dali and pink floyd, who were tapped to do the soundtrack. (you may think i'm making this up, but jordorowsky was the SHIT back in the '70s.
I suppose, in a sense, he was picked, if you believe his story about a divine entity appearing to him in a dream and telling him that his next film must be Dune. Other than that, I think it was all his own idea, not any studio's.
I heard that the original film was going to be in excess of 6 hours and the studios freaked and cut the shit out of it. Anyone know anything about this?
Also if you want to feel really angry I advise watching the Alan Smithee TV edited version of Lynch's film that he disowned, it is one of the worst films ever made...
I thought it had really good special effects for a 1984 movie, it was also well casted when I read the books I pictured the characters from Lynch's movie.
