I am writing a book on how to live in San Francisco for next to nothing. Any suggestions about restaurants with CHEAP grub would be greatly appreciated. I'm not talking about Jack in The Crack or similar fast food places but actual sit-down places. Buffets or burritos or great breakfast specials, etc...Thanks!

Hmmm - you are cutting it pretty close with that 5 buck thing - raise it to 8 and you open a lot of doors.

For five you are not going to get much further than a burrito, a Salvadorean Pupusa or Tamale, a noodle bowl , a Vietnamese sandwich... all of which are deeelish but less than restaurant-y...

maybe it's more how you define "sit-down"?

I'm a big fan of getting the taco at the burrito places. not quite as big (so no food coma) and cheaper . Prawn super taco at La Cornetta (Glen Park) ± $4.50 vs. $6 burrito (option #2 - split the damn burrito, they're HUGE). I think you can get out of both Grubstake and Tommy's joint for pretty close to $8/person (including a drink). Pho Phu Quoc is a really good sit down Vietnamese place (not a fancy atmosphere) on Irving near 19th (they have a fancier, more $$$ place in the Richmond). PPQ usually works out to be $6 - $9 per person (including tip - you need to be nice to your local waitresses).

I'll keep thinking...

This doesn't have anything to do with SF, but there is a Vietnamese place in Huntington Beach (er, actually, Westminster) called the $1.99 restaurant. Everything, and I mean everything, on the menu is less than two bucks. SF is an expensive place, good luck.

no, the Naan and Curry is still there on Telegraph. there's also a Naan and Curry on O'Farrell and another near 9th Ave. around deep down in the sunset but i'm not sure those places in sf have anything about or under $5.

This is true...that place was my post-drinking savior many a night. If 2 slices and a coke constitute a 'meal' then yes, I guess it can be done in SF.

Amoeba Music down the street always has "free Coke with a slice" coupons on the counter.

Been a while since I lived there, but I remember Fu Wah's on Haight, where you could get a tiny box of Chinese food over rice to go for just a couple of bucks.

And, it's slightly off-topic, but Coit Liquors in North Beach had great prices on wine. The best value was Rene Junot red, a bottle drinkable French plonk for $3.69.

you can eat pigeon shit and share a cardboard box with the bums , thats pretty much the only way.

or you can pimp yourself at the corner of polk and post and leave on ramen noodles and sleep in golden gate park.

hmmm ,

i'll chip in as I think more smile

Most dumpsters behind the restaurants are fairly accessible.
