Don't get me wrong, I hate Bill Gates and Microsoft. That said....to use the term "communist" as a derogatory word is to flaunt your ignorance and nothing more. Try to find some relevant propaganda to spread if you must.

i heard that bill gates gives away something like 55% of what he makes a year to charity. also, i saw a clip where he was pummeled with some cream pies (by a group of persons who's mission it is to pummel famous people with cream pies), and he thought the whole idea was hilarious. he was laughing his butt off. i don't know much about bill gates, but he seems like a good kid.

If anyone here is actually literate in political economy, Friederich August Hayek wrote an entire book on how socialism leads to communism, which necessarily leads to fascism and tyranny. It's called The Road to Serfdom and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in political economics, even if you disagree with his main tenet that socialism, by virtue of being a planned economy, inevitably leads to totalitarian rule, because it requires an entity to make the economic decisions for the populace.

Yeah, considering the fact that there are socialist countries in the world today that have yet to succumb to tyranny. Admittedly, greed is a difficult bear to wrestle, but it is possible if there are enough checks and balances in place (personally and/or professionally).

I'll check out the book though.

... and it was going nowhere until he wrangled DOS from IBM who had very little confidence in it's future (and there's some question as to whether IBM actually it owned it to begin with). I'll give Gates credit, but not in software engineering. He's a brilliant business tactician and when he wants something, he goes full tilt until he gets it.

Whether Stalin's crimes are as well-known as they should be, I'll leave to this book:
Koba the dread.

Blaming Stalin's reign of terror on communism is like blaming Jesus for the Spanish Inquisition.

Enough of the book review. I think it's pretty sad that someone has the time to devote to picturing Bill Gates and Microsoft in this light, as opposed to spending said time on developing a better OS. People forget that Gates was a poor schlub who started MS in his freaking garage. Cheers to him.

I can point you in the direction of a couple of books that says the opposite. What Hayek was discussing is State Capitalism as practiced in the USSR and modern China. This is Marxist-Leninism and very different to a lot of current socialist-communist thought.

Empire by, Antoni Negri. This is a very complex book but worth the read.

Stranglely this book is rather good at explaining communism: Das Kapital, by Karl Marx -its amazing how few people read this, albeit it is very, very long.

Plus, any books you can find on Autonomous Marxist theory (mostly Italian intellectuals, like my SG name). This strain of neo-Marxist theory really flips the bird at anyone who thinks communism is a dreary, low growth economic system, and a tyrannical social system.

But overall I think, capitalism, communism and anarchism (especially syndicalism) have valid and useful intellectual tools to help build a better society for all...
