I truly believe that doctors are a waste of time..!!
For the record, I asked people on here not for a diagnosis but for suggestions as to possibilities and to see if anyone had experienced similar symptoms before. I was not gambling with my health but to begin I had assumed it was a normal period.

I called the NHS helpline first and I told them of my symptoms and they asked that I phone my emergency doctor as doctors are closed during the weekend. I was asked to go in immediately. When I arrived I was given a pregnancy test for fear of miscarriage despite that I assured him pregnancy was impossible, (...I couldnt tell him that the only person I have been intimate with in the past 9 months was female) He then pressed on my stomach to check for pains which he found in various parts of my stomach and said nothing. He checked my blood pressure and my heart rate and said that everything was fine. He has given me medication to calm the bleeding and should it not work by Tuesday I need to go to the hospital for more tests

I am considering a female doctor. The woman over the phone seemed more concerned and looked into my symptoms more

My doctors diagnosis? "Its a long period"

As Motorfirebox suggested, you should go to a gynecologist.

Of course you were given a pregnancy test. It doesn't matter if you claimed you hadn't had sex in 12 years. Bleeding abnormally long is commonly due to a miscarriage or complication in pregnancy so don't become frustrated or annoyed that they tested you. It doesn't matter that you say you haven't had sex, they still have to test for common causes (patients do forget/lie about things).

I think it's a bit strange that they would give you medication to stop the bleeding because from what I remember from physiology, you don't really want to stop menstrual blood.

Anyway, go to a gynecologist, get a complete checkup...and then stop using the Internet for diagnosis! You have no idea how lucky you are to have free medical care...for serious. Use it.
